Canada vs Ireland - Day 1 Ireland Claim First Innings Points
|
Canada looked to end a dissapointing Intercontinental Cup campaign when they took on Ireland Tuesday at the Toronto Cricket Club.
Canada has one draw in the ICUP so far this season and have suffered losses to Scotland, Kenya, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe XI.
Ireland were looking to play their way into the final after a somewhat sluggish start, they need to win out both games remaining to have a chance to make it in.
Canada won the toss and elected to bat first and immediately fell into trouble losing both opening batsmen. As has become the pattern in 4 Day cricket, the loss of early wickets was stayed briefly by a fruitful partnership, this time between Zubin Surkari and Ashish Bagai. Both players looked to have little trouble with the Irish bowling before losing their way.
A Trent Johnston triple strike pegged back Canada after an agressive start as Ireland bowled in the right areas and took control of the match. At lunch Canada were 95-7 and finished at 120 all out.
Ireland had no trouble overhauling Canada's score and coasted to 190-4 off 51 overs at the end of Day 1.
Canada XI :
N. Kumar (1), R. Gunasekera (1), Z. Surkari (28), A Bagai* (24), S Dhaniram (17), R Cheema (0,0-5), H Tariq+ (25*), A Dean (4, 2-42), U Bhatti (0,0-54), K Chohan (10, 1-40), H Osinde (4, 1-41) .
Ireland XI :
P Stirling (45), R McCann (4), A Botha(39), K O'Brien (1-15,57), A White (30*), J Mooney, T Johnston (5-23), A van der Merwe (1-20), A Eastwood (3-30), G Dockrell, (0-7, 1*) P Eaglestone (0-22).

THE MAPLE LEAF AGAINST THE SHAMROCK IN CRICKET'S TRANSATLANTIC SHOWDOWN
|
Canada's national cricketers will take on Ireland in a series of international matches taking place at the Toronto Cricket Club this week.
Two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) will be contested over the weekend of September 6-7, following the 4-day Intercontinental Cup match, which runs from August 31-September 3.
The duel between the countries, who have enjoyed a healthy rivalry over the years as two of the top teams from the sport's second tier of competition, will be the last time they meet before heading to the 2011 World Cup in India next February.
Canada, ranked 14th in the world, four places behind Ireland, will be boosted by the presence of its all-time leading run scorer and most capped player, Ashish Bagai, and the return of top-order batsman Zubin Surkari who has recovered from a hamstring injury.
Bagai, who over the last twelve months has averaged a highly impressive 52 runs per innings despite a long-standing knee injury, was recently recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) with a nomination for Associate Countries World Player of the Year.
By contrast, Ireland announced on Saturday that they will be traveling without several key players, including all-rounder Alex Cusack and wicketkeeper Niall O'Brian.
The biggest blow for the Irish comes from the absence of arguably their top batsman and most threatening strike bowler, William Porterfield and Boyd Rankin respectively. Both have been retained by their English county championship sides, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire. Gary Wilson, who plays for English county side Surrey, will also miss the Intercontinental Cup match, but has been released for the ODI matches. Trent Johnston will captain the side.
The Canada-Ireland series sees the return of international cricket to the picturesque Toronto Cricket Club, located close to the Avenue Rd and Wilson Blvd intersection, for the first time in over a year. Entry to the matches is free, and supporters of both sides will be welcome.

Canada vs. Zimbabwe XI Day 2
|
Canada struggled to post a competitive total in the first day of the Intercontinental Cup match against Zimbabwe XI on Monday.
Losing the toss and being sent in, Canada got off to a rollicking start with Hiral Patel (32) leading the way but from there it was all down hill as the batsmen could not get any starts going.
Rizwan Cheema (39*) struck some hefty blows but the skipper had nobody to stay with him and Canada were all out for 129.
In reply, Canada came out firing with some vicious bowling from both openers who accounted for all 3 wickets thus far. Umar Bhatti bowled tidyily (2 wickets) while Henry Osinde took the attack to the Zimababweans and was rewarded when keeper Hamza Tariq snared an impossible catch (see the video on the Cricket Canada facebook fansite).

CBC and WICB go to bat for Cricket Canada
|
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) will
bring Canadian cricket to a national audience after partnering with
Cricket Canada and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for the current
Caribbean T20 tournament.
CBC will live stream Canada?s three games against Trinidad & Tobago,
Jamaica and the Leeward Islands, plus the tournament?s semi-finals and
final. The series will be broadcast on CBCSPORTS.CA from July 22?31.
The decision from the Canadian national broadcaster is an indication that
major players may be looking to capitalize on the growing domestic
audience for a sport that, despite being second only to soccer in terms of
worldwide popularity, has until now remained largely in the shadows of
Canadian mainstream media.
Terry Ludwick, Director of Sports Programming at CBC, comments: ?We?ve
been interested for some time in testing the appetite of Canadians for
cricket programming, and this looks like a great opportunity.
?By making this tournament available online and giving exposure to the
national team, we?re hoping the Canadian public show us they want more.?
Cricket Canada President Ranjit Saini who was instrumental in bringing the
various parties together, and spoke positively about the development.
?We certainly see this as a turning point for Canadian cricket and hope it
represents the start of a new era, where cricket gets the exposure and
recognition it deserves in this country.?
Saini also recognized the role of the WICB in making the deal happen. ?We
have the WICB to thank, as without their generosity first in welcoming us
into their national event, and then in working to secure the broadcast
rights, this simply could not have happened.?
Canada?s first game begins at 3.40pm on Thursday July 22

Canada vs. T&T
|
Trindad cruised to a 9 wicket win in the opening match of the Caribbean T20 tournament in Barbados against Canada.
Losing the toss and being set in, Canada started off slow as they got accustomed to the new conditions. The entrance of Geoff Barnett got the innings going and in his typical agressive manor Barnett took the attack to the Trinidad batmen before falling for a well struck 37 from 33 balls including 2 well hit sixes. Rizwan Cheema entered the fray long enough to pelt the biggest 6 of the innings before falling to Dwayne Bravo's sharp fielding. On a day when the ball followed him everywhere, Bravo set a Caribbean T20 record with 4 catches removing Patel, Barnett, Cheema and Gordon.
Late cameos from Zubin Surkari (26) who hit some glorious shots off Bravo and Umar Bhatti (17) brought Canada to a fighting 110-8 off 20 overs.
The match was broadcast live in Canada on CBCSports.ca

Womens - Canada vs. USA
|
If Canada is going to qualify for the 2013 Women's World Cup, they will have to come from behind against the USA.
In the first game of the series the USA rolled to a convincing 112 run victory. Batting first the USA put up an impressive 225-6 from 50 overs. The USA batting was led by Durga Das (53) and Indomatie Goordial-John (83) whose partnership of 92 set the platform for the imposing total. The rest of the USA bastmen were unable to really mount any real answer to the Canadian bowling attack but were helped out by 35 Canadian extras and some intelligent batting around Goordial-John.
In reply, Canada was shellshocked by Shondelled Ward (5-20) who knocked out the top 4 batsmen for 12 runs essentially blunting the chase of any Canadian counter attack. Mikaela Turik (40) batted beautifully for Canada but was run-out while in good touch.
The two teams clash again tomorrow, a match which Canada must win to keep its world cup dream alive.

WCL Div 1 5th Place - Canada vs. Kenya
|
For the second consecutive day Canada has ground out a tough win against a spirited Kenyan side at WCL Division 1. A tough pitch to bat on threw the advantage to Canada's bowlers led by Rizwan Cheema (3-36) which restricted Kenya to 190.
Canada's batsmen struggled to make ground losing wickets at regular intervals before Ashish Bagai (39) and Zubin Surkari (49) made a stand to set up the victory. At the end Canada got home with 4 balls to spare as Jimmy Hansra (1-23 and 13*) and Umar Bhatti (2-48 and 8*) saw the team home.
A tough tournament comes to and end with two important ODI victories against a team on the Reliance ODI Table salvages some pride and injects some confidence into the Canadian team. The pitches made batting difficult for all the teams and those who showed the ability to graft for their runs ultimately prospered.
The Irish were full value for their billing as the top associated, wining with several players away on assignment for most of the tournament. Scotland finished in second as their rebuilt towards 2013 continues. The Afghans continued their strong play nosing out the Dutch for 3rd.

Canada vs. Kenya
|
Canada and Kenya clashed in a battle of winless teams today at WCL Division 1. The dead rubber (both teams had already been relegated to the 5th vs. 6th place match on Saturday) still had a lot at stake for both teams starving for ODI victories this year.
Ashish Bagai won the toss and elected to field, a decision that paid off for captain as the bowlers backed him up with a glittering performance. Harvir Baidwan who has been in fine form picked up 3 wickets (bringing his total to 6 in the past 3 games) to lead the Canadian attack. Rizwan Cheema (2-28), Parth Desai (2-33) and Hiral Patel (1-33) joined in on the wicket taking to restrict Kenya to 153.
Canada started well before Hiral Patel (18) lost his way which followed with 3 wickets falling in quick succession to leave Canada at 71-4. As he has consistently the skipper guided his team home under difficult conditions. Bagai (61*) continued his fine run of form (392 at an average of 65.33 in his last 8 international matches) and played an evenly paced innings to seal the victory. Bagai was joined at the other end by Zubin Surkari (21*) who played the supporting role to give Canada a much needed victory.
Canada and Kenya clash again on Saturday in the battle for 5th place.

Deutrom Expresses Concern About ICC Proposal
|
Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom has outlined his concern at the prospect of the World Cup shrinking again after 2011, after the bleak picture that was painted last week by ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
The World Cup was reduced from 16 teams in 2007 to 14 next year and Lorgat emerged from the Chief Executives Committee meeting to state that the enlargement of the World Twenty20 and compression of the World Cup is a popular idea among the full members.

Canada vs. Ireland
|
Canada turned in perhaps their best bowling and fielding performance of the week today but it was in vain and Canada dropped a 5 wicket contest to the Irish in the Netherlands today. Parth Desai (3-35) was the pick of Canada's bowlers who inspired a mini Irish collapse from 50-0 to 92-5 but Canada were unable to move things along any further as Ireland got home with 11 overs to spare.
Earlier in the day, Canada laboured to a score of 154-9 from 50 overs. Winning the toss and batting first, Canada immediately lost the openers and were in a hole at 6-2. Nitish Kumar (38) and Geoff Barnett (26) did rebuild the innings slightly but the Irish spinners strangled the life out of the middle order and restricted Canada to a meagre total.
Canada are now resigned to the 5-6th place match where they look to be playing Kenya who have also stuggled to make a mark in this tournament. Canada and Kenya will play on Friday to close out the round robin.

Canada vs. Netherlands - Bagai plays lone hand in loss
|
Canada has dropped its third straight game at the WCL Division 1 tournament. For the second match in a row, Canada's batsmen were taken out of the game early and unable to overcome the opposition bowling.
Defending a meagre total, Canada's bowlers did yeoman's work today with Harvir Baidwan picking up 2-28 but the total of 168 was simply not enough to defend.
EArlier in the day, a stunning batting collapse left Canada with lots of work to do in order to salvage today's game against the Netherlands.
Winning the toss and batting first, Bagai stroked yet another half century (his 3rd on this tour) but could find little in the way of support from his teammates as Canada slumped to 168. Only Geoff Barnett (34) and Calvert Hooper (27) offered any sort of resistance as Canada's batting folded.
Canada has struggled to get any momentum going on tour and while the introduction of fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh, the legendary fast bowler, offered the bowlers a shot in the arm for today's clash, it was simply not enough on the day.

Happy Canada Day! - Canada vs. Afghanistan
|
Skipper Ashish Bagai won the toss and backed his batsmen to do the job. Afghanistan struck early to remove the danger man Rizwan Cheema and then Zubin Surkari leaving Canada at 28-2 but the skipper and young Hiral Patel (43) rebuilt Canada's innings with a 78 run stand.
After Patel's departure Bagai (82) continued before falling to a ball that kept low after another stellar innings. From there it was up to Jimmy Hansra (30) on ODI debut and the veteran Umar Bhatti (32) to carry Canada forward. Bhatti was extremely harsh on the Afghan bowlers hammering 4 4s and 1 6s at a S/R of 152. The two put on a 50 run 6th wicket partnership before Bhatti fell. Hansra continued unbeaten oni debut to the end carrying Canada to 257. The last 5 overs yielded 49 runs as Canada took good advantage of the powerplay.
In reply the Afghans came out fighting hard and Canada's customary early breakthrough was missing. The Canadians will rue the fact that they didnt put up another 15-20 runs as once again the two teams played a classic encounter. Of the 4 games played all time, 3 have come down to the wire.
Thanks to everyone who is following on Twitter for Canadian insight from the ground and the lockeroom.

Cricket Canada National Championships
|
For the first time since 2005 Cricket Canada will host a 50 over national championships. The 5 team tournament to be held July 26-30 in Toronto will see teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Prairies, Ontario, and Eastern Canada compete for the Ed Bracht trophy.
Regional playdowns for the Prairies team will get underway this weekend and Saskatchewan travels to Winnipeg to take on Manitoba in a two game series. The July long weekend will see Nova Scotia visit Quebec in the Easter Canada regional.
Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini feels that a national tournament is critical for the success of the organization.
"As an organization it is our duty to deliver a viable national championships for our players and supporters. It has been 5 long years since we all got together in Vancouver for a 50 over competition and we will be looking for the same high quality tournament that we had then."
Like 2005, the tournament will serve as a precursor to the 2011 Cricket World Cup and give the players in Canada a chance to showcase their talents ahead of a world cup selection. While much of the senior team will be engaged in the Caribbean at the Caribbean T20 tournament, Saini sees this as a time for new talent to shine.
"Obviously the Caribbean tournament was an opportunity we could not pass up so this will allow new players to step up and take on the challenge of becoming national players. The High Performance group is also working on some opportunities for a Canada A side so there is much to play for. For our friends in the muslim community, the holy month of Ramadan begins in August and we wanted to finish the tournament before that time to ensure that all players had an opportunity to participate in the tournament."
This will be the 21st occasion that Canada's provinces have competed for national supremecy in Cricket. Ontario has won the most tournaments (12), followed by BC (4), Quebec (3), Alberta (2). The innagural event in 1947 was shared between Ontario and Quebec.

Canada has wont the ICC Americas Division 1 tournament in Bermuda defeating hosts Bermuda in the finals by 4 wickets.

In reply Canada lost their skipper Rizwan Cheema (8) early but the rest of the batting, untested so far in the tournament, stepped up and took Canada to victory in 42 overs. Trevin Bastiampillai (66) who struggled early on in the tournament top scored for Canada and shared a critical stand with Zubin Surkari (35) to set up the win. Canada bulldoze Bahamas
|
Canada strolled to a 10 wicket win over Bahamas at the ICC Americas Division 1 tournament in Bermuda
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Bahamas were quickly supressed as the Canadian bowlers continued their confident form taking wickets at regular intervals and restricting the opposition to 98 in 36.5 overs.
Canada's reply was overwhelming as Rizwan Cheema struck massive blows to all parts of the ground and chased the paltry total in only 8.5 overs. Cheema finished with an unbeaten 85 in 42 balls and claimed obvious man of match honors.

Canada cruise past Argentina
|
Canada cruised to a perfect 3-0 at the ICC America's Division 1 tournament in Bermuda today with a 6 wicket victory over Argentina. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Canada struck early again as the Argentine top order slumped to 35-4 after Calvert Hooper (2-22) and Khurram Chohan (3-32) again did the damage for Canada. Hiral Patel (2-32) and Sunil Dhaniram (1-29) both picked up wickets as the Argentina tail wagged adding 65 runs in the last 10 overs.
Canada started off defiant in response as Rizwan Cheema blasted the Argentina bowlers to all parts of the ground before edging a Gary Savage delivery to slips for 35. Closely followed by the untimely dismissals of Trevin Bastiampillai (4) and Hiral Patel (2), Canada was precariously placed at 45-3.
Zubin Surkari (52) and Sandeep Jyoti (50*) took centre stage. The two built a 91 run partnership in 12 overs to take Canada to victory. Jyoti put an exclamation mark on the victory hitting a towering 6 to finish the match.
Surkari picked up Man of the Match honours for his efforts
Canada now takes on the Bahamas tomorrow before completing the 50 over portion of the tournament in what is likely to be an unofficial final vs Bermuda on Thursday.

|
Cricket Canada is currently exploring various commercial models that will enable the organisation to host cricket-based events on a year-round basis. In this capacity, Cricket Canada is now actively seeking Expressions of Interest from companies, organisations or parties looking to capitalize on the opportunities that exist within Cricket Canada?s various markets and audiences.
At the present time, Cricket Canada and its partners have opened communication channels with other Full and Associate Members of the ICC, and other prominent cricket clubs from Full Member nations. Our partners Sports International Marketing (SIM) and Krimson Media Pvt Ltd have been engaged in these activities on our behalf, and Cricket Canada is pro-actively assisting the process.
The opportunity and appetite for quality cricket events held in Canada has been well recognized by the ICC, our business partners, and Cricket Canada itself. In creating cricket events that are uniquely Canadian, Cricket Canada will harness the support, passion and interest of Canada?s diverse communities and local sponsors. While Cricket Canada continues to secure international fixtures with Full and Associate Members, it will direct much of its energy towards creating financially viable, marketable, quality events that can be held on an annual basis.
Cricket Canada is also exploring live broadcast opportunities for cricket games in Canada with major TV networks. Cricket Canada is currently in discussion with one major broadcast network for a 2010 event.
Cricket Canada is inviting potential strategic partners and other parties with access to capital, expertise and other relevant resources to respond with a Letter of Interest (LOI) expressly for the hosting of such events in Canada, the development of event venues and a commercial league.
Canada currently has more than 500 domestic cricket clubs, over 20,000 league players, and a population of 13 million people originating from major cricket-playing countries. India is currently the number one source country of immigration in Canada.

T20 Cricket World Cup
|
If there was any ever doubt about the excitment generated by T20 cricket in Canada, those doubts were put to rest over the last 3 weeks of excitement in the Carribean. Despite Canada not partaking in the third T20 Cricket World Cup, thousands of Canadians were glued to their televsions and several more made the trip down to the West Indies to take in the excitement. The tournament had several exciting moments including Australia's last over heroics against Pakistan that vaulted the Aussies into contention for their first ever T20 title.
When the dust settled it was England who captured their first ever ICC title in 35 years of trying defeating Australia by 7 wickets to seal the title. T20 Cricket continues to grown in popularity and the excitement and entertainment value rivals that of any sport on the North American scene.
With the apetite's sufficiently whetted, cricketers take to the field all over the country and the season are now underway in every major Canadian league.
Canada will return to T20 Cricket in the ICC America's T20 competition next month in Bermuda.

Bagai To Rehab Knee
|
Canada's skipper Ashish Bagai, who has been heroically been playing on his injured knee will spend the next few weeks rehabilitating his injury ahead with an eye on returning to action in World Cricket League Division 1 in the Netherlands.
The 28 year old Bagai, has been Canada's leading batsmen this year and is the team leader in ODI appearances and runs.
Cricket Canada's High Performance Manager Ravin Moorthy was positive about Bagai's speedy return to action
"...Ashish has been playing through with an injured knee and unfortunately it has not improved much in the last 3 months. He is now getting treated and going through a intensive rehabilitation program with the medical staff. The Doctors including the medical team at SPC have recommended a scope surgery and/or a Botox injection to help along with the rehab process. It is beneficial for both Ashish and the team that he gets his knee right before playing again. The team doctors are woking extremely hard with him to get it right. We hope to have him back soon..."
Rizwan Cheema will lead the team in Bagai's absence for the ICC America's Division 1 Championship in Bermuda.

Team for ICC America's Division One Championship
|
Cricket Canada is pleased to announce the following squad for the upcoming ICC America's Division One Championship in Bermuda May 28th to June 6th, 2010:
Rizwan Cheema - Captain
Khurram Chohan - Vice Captain
Harvir Baidwan
Trevin Bastiampillai
Umar Bhatti
Rustam Bhatti
Parth Desai
Sunil Dhaniram
Jimmy Hansra
Calvert Hooper
Sandeep Jyoti
Nitish Kumar
Usman Limbada
Zubin Surkari
National team head coach Pubudu Dassanayake was pleased with the squad and will be looking for the team to return the America?s championship trophy to Canada stating "...we have just come out of a tough tour of the West Indies and are looking to build up into the WCL Division 1 and continue on into the World Cup. Our expectation for this team is high and we are looking to reassert ourselves in the region..."
Dassanayake will hand the team over to former Canadian captain and current Cricket Operations Officer Ingleton Liburd for this tour. Dassanayake will be participating in the upcoming Cricket Australia Conference June 1-3 in Australia. This annual conference involves the majority of Australia's full-time state and national coaching, sports science and sports medicine staff.
Second Vice President Vimal Hardat backed Liburd to do well with the team, ""...Ingleton Liburd is one of our all time great players and we feel very comfortable handing over the reigns to him for this tour...the expectation will be high but we are confident he can deliver..."
There are a few changes in the team itself, most notably is the absence of Ashish Bagai. Bagai is rehabilitating his injured knee ahead of what is to be a grueling push to the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Bagai's absence puts Vice-captain Rizwan Cheema in charge of the team. Cheema deputized earlier this year for Bagai during the tour of Sri Lanka. "...with Ashish unavailable for this tour we are looking to (Rizwan) Cheema and Chohan to lead this team to a good performance...we have confidence in our young players to perform in this competition but are looking to see some good contributions from the senior players as well..." said Chris James, chairman of senior selectors, upon release of the squad.
Training camp has started in Toronto and the team will leave on May 27th for Bermuda.

Busy Months for KIDS program
|
March and April were extremely busy months for the Cricket Canada KIDS program. Hundreds more school children across Canada were introduced to cricket. In Quebec, seminars have been carried out for coaches representing 46 schools in the Montreal area. This achievement marks a milestone for both the Quebec Cricket Federation and Cricket Canada in efforts to grow grassroots cricket in Quebec.
Charles Pais, president of the Quebec Cricket Federation has been excited about the progress ??we are extremely pleased in Quebec to be making inroads into the local schools program, this is a great tribute to the hard work of all the volunteers involved as well as support from Cricket Canada??
"Elsewhere across the country, New Brunswick Cricket has announced a
partnership with Partners of Youth community outreach program to introduce
cricket to school aged children that may not be able to join organized
groups or have varied risk factors in their lives.". Later this month a second session will be conducted with teachers in the area. After a overwhelming response from the initial session, several more sessions are scheduled throughout the year.
Aditya Aggrawal of New Brunswick Cricket commented on the importance of building a strong grassroots structure in the region ??the demand for cricket is on the rise in Canada and New Brunswick is no different?we are really happy with the way the program has taken off in the province??
The successes in both provinces built upon a busy February where several schools in the Durham regional school board became part of the Cricket Canada KIDS family.
Wicket will also be busy in action next month in Alberta where 30 new schools will join the KIDS program at sessions in May.
The Cricket Canada schools program is part of the KIDS initiative to introduce the game at a grassroots level through schools and communities across the country.

Canada declines u19CWC for 2012
|
Cricket Canada has regrettably informed the ICC, world cricket's governing body, of its decision to decline the opportunity to host the ICC 2012 U-19 World Cup.
Despite considerable efforts from the organization, which included presentations to all levels of the Canadian Government as well as corporate and private investors, Cricket Canada has been unable to secure the financial support necessary to complete infrastructural upgrades, as outlined in a report from the Dubai-based International Cricket Council.
Ranjit Saini, newly elected President of the organization, expressed great disappointment at an opportunity lost.
For Canada to be given the opportunity to host the Under-19 Cricket World Cup is a statement from the world community that North America, is the next big thing for one of the world's biggest sports.
To have lost that opportunity because we are unable to secure enough interest from any source is an enormous blow to the sport and a great shame for the many talented young players in Canada. We have thousands of kids in development programs who would dream of playing for their country at home in a truly global tournament.
The ICC report, delivered in September 2009, outlined improvements needed to host an international sporting event.
Contrary to recent speculation, Canada's existing turf pitches could have been returned to playing standard within the ICC schedule, but it was the cost of the additional infrastructure required for the event that proved beyond the organisation's reach in the absence of external financial support.
Unfortunately, we just had too much to do in too little time, says Saini. From the time I became Interim President in 2009, Cricket Canada has been focused on doing everything we could to make this event happen, including setting up a committee that included professionals with the experience to ensure success. We have passion, commitment and talent in Canada, the only thing missing was investment.
Considering the future of cricket in Canada, Saini is more optimistic: We have a huge talent base in Canada, and India's IPL has shown that cricket is exciting, fast-paced and will attract TV audiences. I am certain cricket is coming to Canada in a big way.
Cricket Canada has requested the ICC award the U-19 CWC 2014 to Canada thereby allowing the CC sufficient time to secure the required funding.
In his reply to Cricket Canada Lorgat praised the organization stating "We are grateful to Cricket Canada for making what we recognise will have been a very difficult decision but their realistic and responsible approach allows ICC the time to find a suitable alternative venue,"
The ICC meets this weekend in Dubai.

Canada vs. West Indies
|
Canada took on West Indies in the final tour match of the visit to Jamaica.
West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. Andre Fletcher (48) and Shiv Chanderpaul (101) built a steady opening partnership of 88 before Fletcher fell to Parth Desai (1-60) who took a wicket with his first ball in ODI cricket. Canada was unable to capitalize on the breakthrough as Chanderpaul was joined Darren Bravo (74) to carry the score past 200. Some late hitting by Ramnaresh Sarwan (47*) saw West Indies past the 300 mark and left Canada with much to do to stay in the match.
Canada was unable to mount any resistance as again the bats failed to produce any tangible contributions. A late rally from Umar Bhatti carried Canada to some respectability but the gulf between the two countries was widely apparent on this day.

Bats Ring Hollow on Carribean Adventure
|
Canada's bastmen continue to find Jamaica an inhospitable place to play as for the second straight match, runs were hard to come by.
Fielding first, Jamaica set a fair total of 175 with youngster Parth Desai continuing to flourish as the find of this tour. Desai who bowled economically in Canada's first two games of the tour picked up his first international wickets at the senior level finishing with a career best 3-21.
In reply Canada again lost early wickets as Bastiampillai fell without troubling the scorers. He was soon followed by Patel and then Cheema (24) who's quick fire knock gave Canada some early hope. The hardwork was again left to the skipper who once again shined scoring his second half century of the tour. Bagai's 51* was supported by Usman Limbada (19) but could not find any help elsewhere as the batting crumbled for 112-8 in 20 overs.
Canada has one last chance at a win on this tour but it will not be easy, they move to storied Sabina Park where they take on West Indies on Tuesday.

Canada Prepares for Island Experience
|
Next week Canada will leave for a short tour of Jamaica that will include a ODI against the West Indies. Canada has not played the West Indies since 2008 in a tournament where Rizwan Cheema stole the show striking half centuries in both matches. Also on this tour, Canada will take on West Indies XI and Jamaica in T20 matches and Jamaica in 50 over matches.
The core of the team, remains in tact and is mainly comprised of players that took part in the January -February tour of Sri Lanka and UAE but the selectors have opted to include young left arm spinner Parth Desai and batsmen Zubin Surkari. Desai showed good promise in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup held in New Zealand. Desai's potential inclusion in the playing XI , will be along other youth players recently injected into the team, like Hiral Patel, Nitish Kumar, and Usman Limbada who have already made solid contributions to the senior side and bring youthful exuberance and much needed speed in the field.
Jawad Dawood and Trevin Bastiampillai were two of the bright spots with the bat on the previous tour and they will be expected to build of that this time around. Captain Ashish Bagai was happy to have the team together and looking to bring the new players into the team..."we've seen what they can do and now its up to us to pull together as a group and give all the players the opportunity and support to succeed..."
Zubin Surkari who has been once again called up after an 8 month absence, will join the team to try and stabilize the batting and help with a solid effort in the field. Bagai was happy to have Surkari back in the squad "...he's been in and out and we're looking for him to really solidify his place with some good performances...he's immensely talented and we know what he can do..." Bagai for his part will be looking to continue his rich vein of form. Canada's most capped player has averaged over 50 in limited overs cricket since rejoiing the team full time and will again be counted on to produce with the bat and the gloves.
Coach Pubudu Dassanayake was upbeat about the team's chances on the upcoming tour..."we are going through solid preparation both physically and mentally, and we will have the help of a few specialists in the coming days and in Jamaica...we will be prepared. We are going through an intense pre trip camp in Toronto with the entire team in place...it has been a long time since we have had the entire group together for a prolonged training period..."
The team leaves on April 6th for Montego Bay.

Bagai and Chohan Inspire as Dawood Blasts Canada Home
|
The 200th ODI at Sharjah Cricket Association stadium was a special day for cricket worldwide and on Thursday Canada put on a show to ensure the day will not soon be forgotten. The game, a day-night match scheduled as a celebration of this historic venue came on the heels of a thriller played on Tuesday between the two sides that Afghanistan won by 1 run.
Khurram Chohan (4-38) led the pace bowling attack and they accounted for 9 of 10 Afghan wickets (Bhatti 2, Cheema 2, Baidwan 1) and showing the form that had carried Canada in 2009. Reducing the mighty Afghans to 38-5, they eventually tidied them up for 177.
Canada stumbled out of the gate losing Cheema (8) and Bastiampillai (18) but a 83 run stand between Jyoti (38) and Bagai (52) who continued his great run of form carried Canada close to the target.
Afghanistan however fought back and Canada lost 4 wickets for 27 runs putting the match in some doubt before Jawad Dawood (26*), batting in his first ODI wrestled away the match from Afghanistan blasting 2 quick sixes in the first over he faced before settling down and with Usman Limbada (14*) steering Canada home.
The match saw Nitish Kumar make his ODI debut for Canada, making him the youngest ever Canadian and second youngest player of all time to play in an ODI. Kumar bested the Candian record that was previously held by Ruvindu Gunasekara who deputed at 18 against Bermuda in 2008.
The two sides clash again on Saturday in a four day match.

Batting first, Afghanistan sped out on the strength of a 205 run second wicket stand from Noor Ali (114) and Mohammed Shazhad (118) but some tidy bowling from Khurram Chohan (4-28) never let them get away as the innings closed on 289/6.
In reply, Canada's opening pair of Trevin Bastiampillai (33) and Rizwan Cheema (61) provided fireworks early on but quick dismissals left Ashish Bagai (91) and Sunil Dhaniram (56) to consolidate through the middle overs.
Bagai attempted to make a chase of it but eventually fell 2 runs short in the final over as the innings closed on 288-8 from 50 overs.

Cricket Canada Update
|
Last Thursday our senior men's team lost to UAE to conclude the recent T20 Cricket World Cup qualification tournament without a win. Though we were not alone in not moving on in the tournament, Cricket Canada takes this failure to move on very seriously.
2009 was a banner year for Cricket Canada, there were many firsts and after a few sub-par years, performances had turned around with the men's team while success continued in all our other programs. This included a return to the 50 over world cups for the men and the u19 team.
Obviously we felt that this would continue into 2010 with both our senior men's team's and u19 teams engaged in high profile tournaments.
Like our fans and supporters both the adminstration and players expected more out of the first two months of the year and are deeply frustrated at the results. We are in a transition phase as we try to refresh our team with future stars while at the same time retain our commitment to putting a winning product on the field. This is not an easy task and we are paying the price for decades of stagnation in development programs in this country.
With this in mind, we are instituting a full review of all of our cricket programs. The review will commence later this month and will be spearheaded by person's independant of Cricket Canada. We have asked that all of our personnel cooperate with us during this time and are confident we will emerge stronger and better prepared for the challenges that await us.
We thank you for your continued support

All Round Kenya Dash Canada's Hopes
|
Canada's bid to make it to three world cups on the trot came to a crashing end on Wednesday with a comprehensive defeat by Kenya.
Canada had set Kenya 139 to win in the 6th match of group B play. Losing the toss and being put in, Rizwan Cheema set the pace with a blistering 32 from 22 balls. Geoff Barnett (30) and Ashish Bagai (36) kept the scoreboard ticking through the middle overs but Canada were unable to produce a late flourish losing 4 wickets in the final 8 balls.
In reply Kenya shot out of the gates with Alex Obanda and Steve Tikolo getting the best of the Canadian bowlers. Obanda lost his wicket eventually after hitting 79 from 48 balls but Tikolo took his side over the target comforably finishing not on out on 50 from 36 balls.
The loss combined with UAE's defeat of the Netherlands means that Canada will not go through to the super 4 round of this tournament and will miss the 2010 T20 World Cup. Canada had previously qualified for the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the recently completed 2010 u19 Cricket World Cup through the ICC qualification processes.
Canada will finish the tournament against UAE tomorrow before preparing for the ODI and ICUP matches later this month against Afghanistan.

Canada vs. The Netherlands
|
Canada and Netherlands fought a close battle in the opener of the T20 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers on Tuesday with Netherlands getting by the Canadians in the final over.
Canada had won the toss and batted first. An injury to Rizwan Cheema and the early loss of Davison held got the Canadian's off to a slow start but middle order contributions from Barnett (37) and Bilcliff (36) rebuilt the Canadian innings. Cheema did not return to bat after being struck in the face.
Canada posted a total of 142 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.
In reply the Netherlands started quickly with Alex Kervezee (39) and Eric Szwarczynski (25) putting on 57 in the first 6 overs. Bas Zurident joined Kervezee at the crease and kept going as Holland reached 100 in the 13th over. Ryan ten Doeschate sheppared the Holland innings home falling in the 19th over but leaft little for Zuiderent to do to finish the match.
Canada now have no room for error with matches against Kenya (0-1) and UAE (1-0) still to come. The winner of tomorrow's UAE vs. Netherlands match will go through to the super four stages while the loser of Canada vs. Kenya will be eliminated from the tournament.
In Group 'A' play today, the United States staged a massive upset of Scotland while Afghanistan defeated Ireland. In the other Group 'B' match, UAE defeated Kenya earlier in the day.

As the full members race to pack their schedules with matches against each other, the associates are left with what remains, which is often very little. Last year only 2 ODI's were played between full members and associates (with the exception of Kenya's series with Zimbabwe) and the pattern looks to be continuing into 2010. Cricinfo spoke with interim president Ranjit Saini about the plight of associate cricket.

Cheema Misses Out on IPL Berth
|
Cricket fans across the world were dissapointed to learn that one of biggest power hitters in the world Rizwan Cheema was not one of 13 players drafted into an IPL squad for the upcoming edition of the IPL.
Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini issued the following statement from Toronto following the results of the latest IPL Player Auction
"We were of course dissapointed to learn Rizwan was not picked up by one of the franchises but it has made us more determined to try harder to get him and other Canadian players into the next edition of the tournament...Rizwan will be helped by another year of good performances and hopefully a standout performance in the 2010 T20 Cricket World Cup, should we qualify, which will be the difference for next year...It is difficult for Associate cricketers to get recognition on the world stage but Rizwan and Ryan (ten Doeschate for the Netherlands) getting this far bodes well for the future..."
Rizwan and the rest of the Canadian team are back on the field on Wednesday when they take on Wayamba Cricket Club in Sri Lanka.

Canada negotiated the first powerplay in style picking 50 runs from the first 10 overs led by openers Ruvindu Gunasekara(20) and Hiral Patel (29). 3 quick wickets through the next 10 overs halted their progress but a fighting half century from Usman Limbada (90) in which he shared key parterships with Darius D'Souza (20) and Hamza Tariq (11) helped set the stage for a competitive total. Arsalan Qadir (8*) and Riyazkhan Pathan (7*) took Canada over the 200 mark and a fighting score.
In reply Zimbabwe struggled against the opening pace attack of Arsalan Qadir and Zain Mahmood slumping to 23-3 before a middle innings recovery from Mashawidza (75) and Lindsay (45) took them back on course. A breakthrough from Parth Desai cracked open the door for Canada and Mahmood broke it down picking up 2 more wickets as the tail wagged but not enough to carry Zimbabwe to victory

Cheema Through To Auction Stage of IPL
|
Canada's swashbuckling allrounder Rizwan Cheema is one of 51 players through to the final phase of the Indian Premier League auction. The auction is to be held on January 19, 2010.
Commenting on his official twitter page this morning, IPL Chairman Lalit Modi was hopeful stating "...I hope they (Cheema) do it will motivate others and will be good for canadian cricket"
Speaking from Toronto this morning, Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini was pleased with the development and offered the following statement :
This is a proud moment for Cricket Canada and its members, the Toronto and District Cricket Association (TDCA), and Popeyes Cricket Club. This level of endorsement can only be achieved through an athletes hard work over years and complete dedication to achieve excellence in the game.
The building of thus level of athlete requires support from several people, our national coach Pubudu and his team, other members of our national squad and high performance initiatives of ICC have all contributed towards this achievement.
We want to acknowledge the most critical contribution of Mr. Faisal Malik, the volunteer owner of Popeyes Cricket Club and the TDCA board for making tremendous efforts towards building of athletes of this level. The personal contributions of Mr. Faisal Malik that include tens of thousands of dollars of personal money and countless hours towards his club have been key. On behalf of Cricket Canada I thank him for his erfrorts and personal sacrifices.
Selection in the IPL auction won't be automatic as there are only 17 or less openings available and more than 50 cricketers nominated. From our perspective our candidate is as good as or better than many others.
Due to lack of the exposure and limited international matches, the athletes from associate countries face an uphill task to achieve international recognition. Should Rizwan get selected and becomes part of IPL, the boost in Cricket Canada brand name will be phenomenal and the public awareness about Cricket in North America and particularly Canada will grow significantly.
I also wish to acknowledge the support from our friends in IPL and BCCI. I am particularly thankful to Mr. Lalit Modi for creating a wonderful event and helping our athletes to present their skills to IPL franchises.
This is the beginning of a banner year for Cricket Canada
Go Cricket! Go Canada!
