Cheema Nominated for ICC Award
|
A whirlwind 12 months for Rizwan Cheema has culminated in his nomination for the ICC
Associate and Affiliate Player of the year award. The award will be presented at the ICC Annual Awards Ceremony October 1, 2009 in Johannesburg. The Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year award serves to recognize and reward the efforts in all international matches of the outstanding cricketers from the teams outside the ICC Full Members.
Cheema burst onto the international cricket scene in 2008 with two spectacular half centuries
against the West Indies during the 2008 Scotiabank Series with scores of 61 and 89 averaging
61.33 in the 3 game series. Cheema then followed up with scores of 35, 23 and 68 against
Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka respectively in the Al-Barakah T20 Series held in Toronto.
Cheema?s solid form continued into the spring of 2009 where he picked up 228 runs and 10
wickets helping Canada qualify for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. A solid tour of Europe which
included a half century against the Netherlands followed by a blistering match winning knock in
the ODI against Kenya in Toronto cemented a very successful year for the Canadian all-rounder.
Also nominated in the category with Cheema are Ryan ten Doeschate and Edgar Shiferli of the
Netherlands and William Poterfield of Ireland.
The shortlist for the ICC's sixth annual awards set for October 1 in Johannesburg, were chosen
by a 25-member panel from the nominations announced earlier this month. The panel consists of
former players, journalists and ICC officials. This year's awards include eight individual prizes, as
well as the Spirit of Cricket award for a team. Apart from this, the Test and ODI teams of the
year will also be announced.

Day 9 - ICC U19 CWC Qualifier
|
Hong Kong skipper Jamie Atkinson revealed his delight after his side secured qualification to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010, despite losing by one-wicket to the USA.
In a thrilling last-over finish, the USA achieved victory with one ball remaining, but Hong Kong's net run-rate was good enough to edge out the Netherlands and Uganda and seal its place in next year's 16-team tournament.
"All the boys are just over the moon that we have qualified and at the way we fought back after such a poor start to the event," said Atkinson.
In other matches, Afghanistan experienced a disappointing day with the bat as Canada dismissed it for just 165 all out in 40.4 overs, with Shir Shirzai top scoring with 28. Canada's attack was led by Hiral Patel who took 3-18 and Nitish Kumar who grabbed 3-26.
In reply. Ruvindhu Gunasekara (57 not out) and Darius D'Souza (36) sealed an excellent five-wicket win for the home team with 6.2 overs to spare to achieve a fourth place. Afghanistan, who started the day as the table leaders, ended the tournament as runners-up.

Day 7 - ICC U19 CWC Qualifier
|
Canada sealed a place in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup after an exciting 24-run victory over Vanuatu in Toronto on Thursday.

Simpson Obed?s brilliant 108 wasn't enough to take Vanuatu to victory, as it was dismissed for 279 all out, with Hiral Patel taking 3-61.
"When I came into bat, I had a really good feeling and wanted to try and get a big score. I always like trying to bat positively," said Usman Limbada, who revealed that he believes Canada will do well at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010.
"For most of us it will be the first time we will be playing in a World Cup. It can really change our lives by playing high-level cricket against some good teams and I really think that we can be competitive at that event as we have a really good team."

Balbirnie inspires Irish victory at U19 Qualifier
|
An excellent all-round performance from Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie inspired Ireland to a 72-run defeat of Afghanistan at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Balbirnie(102) and Lee Nelson (55) added 123 runs for the opening wicket, mixing some aggressive hitting with some good running between the wickets, as Ireland reached 289-7 off 50 overs.
Ben Ackland also displayed his batting talent by making 50 not out off 66 balls, with some aggressive hitting from Stuart Poynter (21 not out off eight balls) helping it set an imposing target.
Afghanistan, who had only arrived on Wednesday afternoon after a long flight from Kabul, showed some promise, with Zakiullah Zaki the pick of the bowlers with 2-41.
In reply, Afghanistan got off to a terrible start as it was reduced to 34-3, before some brave resistance from the middle order helped add respectability to the scorecard.
Among the runs were Asgar Hussain (51), Noor ul Haq (49), Aimal Wafa (45) and Zardi Ali (31), with Balbirnie (3-45) and Graham McDonnell (3-31) starring with the ball for Ireland.

ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier - Day 2
|
The Netherlands staged a remarkable fightback to defeat Hong Kong by 32 runs on day two of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Toronto.
Having struggled with the bat to record a disappointing total of 113 all out, Hong Kong appeared to be cruising to victory until a dramatic batting collapse saw it dismissed for just 81.
"It was some kind of Houdini escape to win the game. We were quite a few runs short even though the outfield is quite slow and the wicket is not that easy. 113 definitely wasn?t enough as we were looking for at least 160," said Roland Lefebvre, the Dutch coach.
"When they were 50-2 we were certainly up against it but then the spinners came on and bowled superbly and took the last eight wickets for 30 runs."
Papua New Guinea continued its winning start to the competition with an excellent 52-run win over Canada.
Batting first, Sese Bau (78) and Heni Siaka (66) gave it an excellent start and some powerful late order hitting helped it record an excellent total of 245-6 off 50 overs.
In reply, Raymond Haoda was again on top form as Canada slumped to 22-4 and it fell well short of its target despite an unbeaten 10th wicket stand of 63.
In the other match of the day, Uganda defeated Vanuatu by four wickets.
At Maple Leaf 1
Papua New Guinea 245-6, 50 overs

Toronto Star Article: Nitish Kumar
|
Father's memory drives prodigy's cricket passion
Cricket player Nitish Kumar, who may be among the best in the world for his age, has just returned from New York after competing on a Canadian team.
At 15, Nitish Kumar has already played for the national team; his dad would have been proud
The scars on Nitish Kumar's stomach and back serve a purpose well beyond reminding him of the tragic car crash four years ago. They also mark a father's dreams for his son, dreams that have propelled the Toronto teen to the international cricket stage. Kumar, 15, has been called "the Wayne Gretzky of cricket" by his coach and he's made believers out of everyone who takes to the pitch with him.
A few weeks ago, he made cricket history by becoming the youngest player to ever represent Canada in international competition, an Inter-Continental Cup match against Kenya in King City.

Nithesh Kumar's half century leads Canada to title
Nitesh Kumar saved his best innings for the last as the skipper scored 68 not out, getting Canada across the line with a tense three-wicket victory over USA to win the ICC Americas Northern Division U15 Tournament at Erskine Cricket Ground in Brooklyn, New York. Kumar was named Man of the Match and Man of the Tournament after finishing with the second highest runs while topping the averages with 173 at 86.5, in addition to being tied for third in the wickets column with eight dismissals.
"I thought until Nitesh is there, we had a hope," said Canada coach Farouk Kirmani. "People play around Nitesh. He can take charge at the wicket and I told him what to do. Just stay there until the end of the game and we'll be in a winning position."
The match started an hour late because of overnight rain in Brooklyn. The outfield and pitch were fine, but the run ups for the bowlers needed some attention before play could begin. The ground staff did an outstanding job to get the game started with only a short delay.
With the sun shining bright, USA won the toss and elected to bat first. For the second day in a row, Stephan Rajasingam was the catalyst for Canada's success at the start of the innings as he dismissed both openers, Vikram Valluri (2) and Rishi Patel (2), with his left arm medium pace. When Vidura Ratnayake (1-25) got USA captain Steven Taylor out in the fifth over, it left USA in a deep hole at 16-3 and it was never able to climb out of it.
After the early breakthroughs with pace, Canada then strangled USA into submission with tight spin bowling. Persaud top scored with 25 as USA finished at 127-9 in its 40 overs.
In the second innings, USA put in a disciplined bowling performance to make Canada struggle for runs. The first wide wasn't delivered until the 15th over, just after Krish Goel had dismissed Manoosingh for a seven-ball duck to make it 41-4. It wasn't until Ratnayake came in at number seven and scored a rapid 21 that a teammate gave Kumar any kind of help from the opposite end, but when Ratnayake was dismissed by Patel with the score at 87-6, it looked like USA just might defend its small total.
Kumar kept cool though and with Jeevan Sidhu giving him support, the captain steered Canada towards the target. He brought up his 50 in 66 balls as Canada's contingent at the ground gave Kumar a big ovation. Sidhu got out with two needed to win, but on the next ball, Kumar hit the winning runs with a two wide of mid on to give Canada the match and the tournament title.
USA finished second with Bermuda at third. If Bermuda had beaten USA in the first match of the tournament, which USA won by only one run, Bermuda would have been tournament champions because it would have finished level on points with Canada but would have won out with a superior net run rate.
At the post tournament trophy presentation, several honors were shared among the teams. While Kumar was named Man of the Tournament, Kamau Leverock of Bermuda was named the Best Bowler at the event after finishing tied with Ratnayake at nine wickets in four matches. Ratnayake was named Best Fielder for his brilliant fielding as he took five catches throughout the week and teamed up for a run out in the final match. Taylor was named Best Batsman after leading the runs list with 183 in four innings including two half-centuries. Christian Burgess was named Best Wicketkeeper for his tidy glovework, not to mention a series of stunning diving catches behind the stumps to finish with the most dismissals in the tournament.http://www.canadiancricket.org/images/miniflags/

Ben Sennik Trophy: 1st ODI: Canada vs. Kenya

Kenya 113, 33.1 overs (M. Ouma 43*; K. Chohan 4-26)
Canada 117/1, 16.2 overs (R. Cheema 76*, Samad 30*)
Canada win by 9 wickets
All-round performance powers Canada to victory
An all-round performance by Canada helped it recover from its comprehensive ICC Intercontinental Cup defeat by thrashing Kenya by nine wickets in the first ODI at King City. Rizwan Cheema produced an unbeaten 76 with the bat while Khurram Chohan picked up four wickets with the ball to score a 1-0 lead in the three ODI series.
Batting first, Kenya was dismissed for 113 in 33.1 overs with skipper Maurice Ouma top-scoring with his unbeaten 43. Player of the Match in the ICC Intercontinental Cup game, Steve Tikolo, was dismissed without scoring a run. Chohan was deemed the best bowler for his figures of 4-26, earning him the Man of the Match Award.
Canada's Rizwan Cheema quickly got into action making his half century off just 24 balls and ended the innings unbeaten on 76 from 38 balls with a strike rate of exactly 200. He was well supported by Abdool Samad (30) as the side cruised to victory in less than 17 overs.

Day 4 - Varaiya finishes what Tikolo started
|
Kenya 317 all out, 86.1 overs (Steve Tikolo 158, Alex Obanda 36; Henry Osinde 3-28, Sunil Dhaniram 2-42) and 362 for 3 dec, 85 overs (Tikolo 169, Waters 157*)
Canada 234 all out, 92.4 overs (Zameer Zahir 57, Sandeep Jyoti 39, Khurram Chohan 31, Umar Bhatti 30; Nehemiah Odhiambo 3-60, Steve Tikolo 2-16, Hiren Varaiya 2-54) and 198 all out, 65.3 overs (Samad 87; Varaiya 6-45)
Kenya defeat Canada by 247 runs.
Six wickets from spinner Hiren Varaiya sealed the deal on the final day of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match at King City, Ontario as Kenya comprehensively beat Canada by 247 runs.
While Varaiya wrapped up the win, in truth the damage was already done for the home team long before the ball was put in the hand of the 25-year-old slow left-armer - the shadow of Steve Tikolo was cast right across this match.
The veteran all-rounder batted with a fluency and power that we haven't seen from the 38-year-old for some time on his way to a personal match total of 327 runs. His 330-run third-wicket partnership with teenage opening batsman Seren Waters in the second innings was a turning point of the match particularly when you bear in mind they came together when Canada was on top at 32-2.
On the final day, with Canada already two down, only some stubborn rearguard batting was going to save the game for Ashish Bagai's team. Opener Abdool Samad played his part, surviving 152 balls for his 87, but he did not receive the sort of support from the other end necessary to worry the Kenyans.
The Canada middle-order failed as Zameer Zahir, Bagai and Nitesh Kumar contributed just one run between them with those three wickets falling in the space of six deliveries. And after that, it didn't take too long for a clinical Kenya to finish the job as Canada was dismissed inside 66 overs.

Young Associates vie for remaining places in ICC U19 Cricket World Cup
|
The final step on the road to qualification for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup will be taken next month as the global qualifying event takes place in Canada from 1 to 13 September.
This intensive 10-team event involves each side playing nine matches in 13 days with the top six making it through to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 which will take place in New Zealand from 16 to 30 January.
In all there will be six grounds used in and around Toronto with Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City providing four of them. The other venues being used are Malton and Sunnybrook with five matches taking place in total per day.
Of course, the 10 hopeful teams have already enjoyed some success having made it through their respective regional qualifiers earlier in the year. The competing teams are: Afghanistan, Hong Kong (Asia), Canada, USA (Americas), Ireland, Netherlands (Europe), Sierra Leone, Uganda (Africa), Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu (East Asia-Pacific).
"The fact we now have regional and global qualifying stages for this event shows how much cricket is developing at age-group level around the world," said David Richardson, ICC General Manager - Cricket.

Day 3 - Tikolo shows the way to fresh Waters
|
Kenya 317 all out, 86.1 overs (Steve Tikolo 158, Alex Obanda 36; Henry Osinde 3-28, Sunil Dhaniram 2-42) and 362 for 3 dec, 85 overs (Tikolo 169, Waters 157*)
Canada 234 all out, 92.4 overs (Zameer Zahir 57, Sandeep Jyoti 39, Khurram Chohan 31, Umar Bhatti 30; Nehemiah Odhiambo 3-60, Steve Tikolo 2-16, Hiren Varaiya 2-54) and 61 for 2 15 overs (Samad 37*, Zahir 0*)
Kenya leads Canada by 385 runs with 8 wickets in hand
It was a case of the old guard showing the way for the new kid in King City yesterday as perhaps the greatest on-field servant of modern-era Kenyan cricket registered his second century of the match while shepherding a man almost 19 years his junior to his maiden first-class ton.
Steve Tikolo and Seren Waters put the Canada bowlers to the sword on day three of this ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Ontario with a third-wicket partnership of 330 that may have broken the spirit of the home side. And two Canadian wickets falling before the close means the East Africans have the North Americans exactly where they want them going into the final day.
It is the second highest partnership in the history of the ICC Intercontinental Cup with only Ireland's Eoin Morgan and Andre Botha managing more (360 against the United Arab Emirates at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi in February 2007).
Waters has been showing good promise since breaking into the senior side last year, hitting 74 in an ODI against South Africa and 75 in the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2007-08 against Ireland. But yesterday the 19-year-old more than doubled his previous highest with an unbeaten 157 that included 19 boundaries.
And who better to show him the way than Tikolo? For years he was widely regarded as the best international batsman outside of the Test nations and over the past few days he has shown there is plenty of life left in his 38-year-old legs. Tikolo's 169, to go with his 158 in the first innings, included 21 fours and two sixes and took his match contribution to 327 runs, two wickets and two catches. In short, it's going to take something special on day four to wrestle the man-of-the-match award from him.
After sneaking the first two wickets for just 32 after 12 overs, Canada then had to toil hard in the field with skipper Ashish Bagai using no fewer than eight bowlers in an effort to break the Tikolo-Waters alliance. Umar Bhatti finally managed it in the 85th over and finished the day with 2-63 but in truth it was the Kenyan batsmen who dominated.
And to add to Canada's misery, it lost the wickets of Rizwan Cheema and Sandeep Jyoti before the close as Kenya sensed it was time to turn the screw. Now the home side faces a long struggle on day four to save the match.

Day 2 - Kenya in control as home batsmen fail to kick on
|
Kenya 317 all out, 86.1 overs (Steve Tikolo 158, Alex Obanda 36; Henry Osinde 3-28, Sunil Dhaniram 2-42) and 14/0, 7.0 overs
Canada 234 all out, 92.4 overs (Zameer Zahir 57, Sandeep Jyoti 39, Khurram Chohan 31, Umar Bhatti 30; Nehemiah Odhiambo 3-60, Steve Tikolo 2-16, Hiren Varaiya 2-54)
Kenya leads Canada by 95 runs with 10 wickets in hand
Canada spurns chances and is dismissed for 234, finishing day two 95 runs behind; Steve Tikolo backs up his first-day batting heroics with a brace of key wickets
A cautious half-century from Canada middle-order batsman Zameer Zahir has just about kept his side in the match but it's Kenya that's in the driving seat after day two of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match in King City, Ontario.
Other contributions from Sandeep Jyoti (39), Khurram Chohan (31) and Umar Bhatti (30) made sure Canada stayed in touch but with so many batsmen establishing themselves at the crease only to get out before making a truly significant score, the home team will feel it did not do itself justice and now has a lot of work to do to save this match.
With wickets being taken at regular intervals throughout the day Canada was all out for 234 not long before the close and as the Kenya openers added 12 without loss before stumps, the east Africans are now very much in control of this match leading by 95 runs with all 10 second-innings wickets intact.
Zameer showed patience and a solid defence as he waited for the bad ball, compiling 57 runs off 131 balls, 40 of which came from nine scoring shots (seven fours and two sixes). But just as he looked set for a big score (he had brought up his 50 two overs before with a towering six) he was run out by Alex Obanda.
Nehemiah Odhiambo took three wickets for Kenya and the hero of the first day, Steve Tikolo, bowled well as he finished the innings with figures of 2-16 off 13 overs, including seven maidens and the key wickets of Abdool Samad and Ashish Bagai. With his innings of 158 in the first innings, it has been a match to remember so far for the veteran all-rounder.
Kenya will look to bat Canada out of the match on day three so the home side will be calling on the likes of Henry Osinde, Umar Bhatti and Khurram Chohan to take the wickets that might give Canada's batsmen a realistic fourth-innings target.

Tikolo rolls back the years and puts Kenya in control
|
Kenya 317 all out, 86.1 overs (Steve Tikolo 158, Alex Obanda 36; Henry Osinde 3-28, Sunil Dhaniram 2-42)
Canada 14/2 (6.0 ov)
Kenya legend scores 158 out of 317 as Canada lose two wickets before the close
A vintage innings from Steve Tikolo has put Kenya in the driving seat after day one of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada at King City.
The 38-year-old proved he still has plenty to offer at this level by hitting his 10th first-class century, stroking 22 boundaries on the way to 158, a contribution that is almost half his team's total score as Kenya was eventually dismissed for 317.
Not content with wielding the willow all day, Tikolo was immediately involved in the field too taking a good catch at second slip to dismiss Amarbir Hansra off the second ball of Canada's innings as the home side was forced to face a tricky six-over spell at the end of the day.
Things then turned from bad to worse for Canada as Rizwan Cheema followed Hansra back to the pavilion having spooned one up to Thomas Odoyo at cover off the bowling of Nehemiah Odhiambo as Canada closed the day on 14-2, still 303 runs behind.
The day hadn't started well for Kenya as it lost Seren Waters and David Obuya with just 27 runs on the board after winning the toss and deciding to bat first. But then Tikolo strode to the crease and put together steadying partnerships first with Alex Obanda and then captain Morris Ouma.
Canada kept plugging away and while Tikolo was comfortable at one end, he did not get the consistent support at the other with no one else passing 36 on the day. Henry Osinde was the pick of the home team's bowlers with 3-28, including the wicket of Tikolo, who eventually fell after a 194-ball innings that rolled back the years for the evergreen stalwart of Kenyan cricket.
Earlier, Toronto teenager Nitesh Kumar became the youngest player to appear in the ICC Intercontinental Cup when he took the field on day one aged 15 years and 85 days. The talented batsman has yet to show what he can do but it will be an interesting side-note to the match and he could just make a name for himself by helping to turn around Canada's fortunes on day two.

Cricket Canada Issues Clarification on Private Cricket
|
Cricket Canada wishes to clarify the position of the organization and the International Cricket Council with respect to the sanction of international cricket in Canada.
Cricket Canada is supportive of the spreading of the game across the country and invites private entrepreneurs to conduct events within Canada but only with the approval and sanctioning of such events by Cricket Canada. Sanction of any event by any other body (including those affiliated with Cricket Canada) will be in default of the above regulations and classified the matches as "Disapproved Cricket"
In addition to having the event(s) sanctioned by Cricket Canada, all foreign based players
belonging to members of the ICC must provide a "No Objection Certificate" from their home
board citing the boards support for playing in the event(s). Any event, league or match does not feature or include a team under the jurisdiction of an ICC Full member country would also require the organizer to garner the approval of the ICC in addition to the approval of Cricket Canada.
These regulations are put in place and applicable to all players whether they are under contract with member boards or not.
As of today, Cricket Canada has received an application for sanction for one event, which it is currently considering, and an announcement is expected to be made in the coming days.
Cricket Canada thanks all of the involved parties and looks forward to a good working
relationship with private entrepreneurs in the future.

Umar Bhatti praises van Bunge after bad weather denies Canada victory in ICC Intercontinental Cup in Rotterdam
|
ICC Release - Canada was all praise for the Netherlands all-rounder Daan van Bunge after weather denied it a certain victory in the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-10 match in Rotterdam.
Almost three hours of play was lost on the final day as the Dutch, resuming the day at 112-5 while chasing 368 runs for victory, escaped with a highly respectable draw. Only 59 overs of play was possible on the last day in which the Netherlands added 121 runs to its overnight score and lost three wickets to finish at 233-8.
The Dutch collected nine points (six for a 52-run first innings lead and three for a draw) from the match while the North Americans, who were sighting 13 victory points, had to settle with just three points for a draw.
Canada captain Umar Bhatti praised van Bunge's match-saving effort, saying: "It was an excellent batting performance by (van) Bunge as he put the team first and batted with tremendous responsibility. Even the sight of a maiden first-class century couldn't distract him. I think his knock has been an example and a lesson for many batsmen."

Rain Assists the Netherlands to a Draw
|
Canada 177 and 419/9 (S Dhaniram 144, Qaiser Ali 61, BA Westdijk 4/85)
The Netherlands 229 and 233/8 (103 ov, van Bunge 98*, Bhatti 4/32, Chohan 2/55)
Match Drawn
ESPN/CricInfo - Daan van Bunge fell two short of a deserved maiden first-class hundred, but nevertheless helped Netherlands pull off a fine result to draw against Canada on the final day at Rotterdam.
Play was delayed by rain on what was a blustery day, and only 59 overs were possible - all of which played into Netherlands hands, as they resumed in the perilous position of 120 for 5. he lost his overnight partner, Jeroen Brand, in the second over of the day when he was trapped lbw by Umar Bhatti, but found good support from Netherlands' dogged lower-order.
Bart Schilperoord helped put on 53 for the seventh wicket as van Bunge passed fifty, and there was a turgid but vitally defensive stand of 37 in 27.1 dead-panning overs with Mark Jonkman, as Netherlands ground the game to a virtual halt.
Jonkman fell, handing Qaiser Ali a wicket to record remarkable figures of 8-7-1-1, but van Bunge was defiant and remained heroically unbeaten on 98, an innings that spanned 294 balls, as the match was drawn.

Dhaniram's career-best 144 puts Canada on the verge of victory
|
Canada 177 and 419/9 (S Dhaniram 144, Qaiser Ali 61, BA Westdijk 4/85)
The Netherlands 229 and 120/5 (44 ov, van Bunge 47*, Bhatti 3/25, Chohan 2/31)
Netherlands require another 248 runs with 5 wickets remaining
A career-best knock by Sunil Dhaniram put Canada on course for a comprehensive victory over the Netherlands at the close of play on the third day of the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-10 match in Rotterdam on Friday.
Dhaniram scored a superlative 144, his second first-class century, to propel the tourists to 419-9 declared. Umar Bhatti then picked up three quick wickets and Khurram Chohan bagged two as the hosts slumped to 77-5 before finishing the day at 120-5 while chasing 368 runs for an unlikely victory.
The Dutch require another 248 runs to collect maximum points from the match and all the hopes, after the weather, rest on the shoulders of Daan van Bunge who was batting on 47. With him was debutant Jeroen Brand on 10 not out as the two batsmen survived 12 overs without being separated.
The day, however, belonged to Guyana-born 40-year-old Dhaniram who was playing in his 29th first-class match. The left-hander had resumed on the third morning at his overnight score of 68 along with Qaiser Ali (60) with the North Americans on 215-3 and leading the Dutch by 163 runs.
After Dhaniram lost Ali in the second over of the day with the addition of only two runs and then Shaheed Keshvani at the score of 229, he took control of the proceedings and did bulk of the scoring with some clean and crisp hitting.
His 144 came off 178 balls and included 17 fours and two sixes before he became the eighth Canadian batsman to be dismissed at the score of 342, falling to debutant Berand Westdijk who finished as the pick of the Netherlands bowlers with 4-85.
Dhaniram added 92 priceless runs for the sixth wicket with wicket-keeper Ashif Mulla who followed up his first innings contribution of 28 with a valuable 40 off 67 balls with five balls.
After the departure of Dhaniram, captain Umar Bhatti (36) and Khurram Chohan (36 not out) added a quickfire 52 for the ninth wicket to take the score from 342 to 394.
The partnership, which came off 51 balls, ended when Bhatti fell to Bunge who finished with 3-109.

Intercontinental Cup: Canada vs. The Netherlands - Day 2
|
Canada 177 and 215/3 (50.0 ov, S Dhaniram 68*, Qaiser Ali 60*, BA Westdijk 1/31)
The Netherlands 229 (de Grooth 36, Nick Statham 57; Sandeep Jyoti 3-59, Cheema 2-20)
ESPN/CricInfo - An unbeaten partnership of 131 between Sunil Dhaniram (63) and Qaiser Ali (60) restored Canada's hopes at Rotterdam, leaving the visitors on 206 for 3 at the end of the second day.
Netherlands' bowling attack struggled to find a decent length and any sort of consistency, allowing Canada to recover from their shaky start of 84 for 3. They finished with a lead of 163 and still have seven wickets in hand.
Ali brought up his 50 in style with a hefty slog sweep for six, clearing the boundary with ease off Daan van Bunge. In an equally impressive manner, Dhaniram cracked a cover drive for four to produce his half century off Pieter Seelaar.
Earlier in the day, Netherlands were bowled out for 229 - an advantage of 52 - with Nick Statham being the only man to produce a significant innings with 57, before being run out by Rizwan Cheema. Tom de Grooth was looking solid, but his innings was cut short at 36 by a handy stumping from Ashif Mulla off Umar Bhatti.
The pick of the bowlers were Sandeep Jyoti, taking 3 for 59 with some impressive offspin, and Zameer Zahir who took 2 for 31 from 17 overs.

Netherlands grabs first day's honours after bowling out Canada for 177
|
Canada 177 all out, 65.4 overs (Sandeep Jyoti 37, Ashif Mulla 28; Daan van Bunge 3-11, Peter Borren 3-37, Peter Seelaar 3-54)
The Netherlands 74-3 (Wesley Barresi 31, Nick Statham 24 not out; Sandeep Jyoti 2-12, Zameer Zahir 1-13)
The Netherlands grabbed an early initiative when it dismissed Canada for a modest 177 on the opening day of the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup in Rotterdam on Wednesday.
Most of the Canadian batsmen got starts but were not able to translate those starts into big scores as Daan van Bunge, Peter Borren and Peter Seelaar equally shared nine wickets between them to dismiss the tourists inside 66 overs after they had elected to bat first.
Bunge, the wrist spinner, picked up 3-11, fast bowler Borren bagged 3-37 and left-arm spinner Seelaar finished with 3-54 as only two Canadian batsmen reached the 20 mark.
One-down batsman Sandeep Jyoti was the top scorer with 37 before he was caught by Seelaar off his own bowling. He hit five fours in his 70-ball knock. Wicket-keeper Ashif Mulla was the other notable run-getter with 28 before becoming the eighth batsman to be caught by Borren off Bunge.
When stumps were drawn for the first day, the Netherlands had reached 74-3 and trails Canada by 103 runs. Opener Nick Statham (24) and Tom de Grooth (5) will resume the home team's first innings on Thursday morning.

Americas U19 - Day 4
|
Canada now looks certain to take one of the two spots in the Global WC U19 Qualifier in September by defeating their North American rivals USA on Day 4 of the U19 Americas
Championship. The game was a lot closer than the margin of victory (62 runs) would indicate. In the final analysis Canada's front line batsmen were slightly better on the
day as both teams got little contribution from their middle order and tail enders. On both sides the middle and lower order batsmen were completely sub duded by the
opposition spinners. On the day spin bowling accounted for 13 wickets and it had nothing to do with the pitch but rather a lack of foot work and the batsmen inability to
read the bowlers. Of the 15 bowlers used in today's match, nine were spinners and one must ask the question was it the right mix or was the batting strength compromised?
Canada won the toss and made the bold decision to bat. While the start saw Canada keep their wickets intact the run rate was a concern for the Canadians.
At 117-3 ( 30 overs) there was still hope for a total of 250 but at this point the spinners completely took control and the remaining batsmen could only add 78 in the
final 20 overs. A target of 193 was certainly possible judging the USA batting performance to date but Canadian opening bowler Maninder Auklah sent both openers back to
the Pavilion for 28 runs. The USA continued to score at a rate of four runs per over but could not keep the wickets from falling. The turning point of the game was a
brilliant run out when Usman Limbada's throw plugged the stumps from twenty yards out and ended a promising comeback by Greg Sewdial who top scored with 41 runs. For
Canada R.Gunasekjera (42),N.Kumar (36) , R.Bhatti (31) and H.Patel (31) lead the batting while H.Patel with 3/28, R.Gunasekera 2/18 and M.Aulakh 2/24 were the top bowlers.
The USA got fine innings from Greg Sewdial (41) and Regis Burton (21).Their bowling attack was lead by Captain Shiva Vashiat who took 3/40.

Canada fall to Holland in 1st ODI
|
Netherlands 237/7 (50 ov, Kervezee 75, Borren 50)
Canada 187 (39.5 ov, Cheema 94, Schiferli 4-44)
Netherlands win by 50 runs
ESPN-CricInfo - Edgar Schiferli prompted a dramatic Canada collapse as Netherlands romped to a 50-run win in the first ODI at Amstelveen, despite a brilliant 94 from Rizwan Cheema.
Chasing 238 Canada lost the early wicket of Geoff Barnett for 16, but Cheema powered their response with a thrilling innings. He and Sandeep Jyoti were out of the blocks quickly, Cheema pulling Schiferli for two consecutive fours and going to his fifty with a magnificent blow over the top off Pieter Seelaar. Jyoti was less explosive, relying on rotating the strike with ones and twos, and he fell for 14 trying to loft over long-on.
Cheema continued to put Canada in a strong position with fours square of the wicket off Seelaar, and two more crunching blows off Peter Borren, but six short of his hundred he mistimed a pull off Mudassar Bukhari and his wicket prompted a dramatic collapse, in which Canada lost 7 for 50. Bowling full and straight, Schiferli - named Man of the Tournament in this year's ICC World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa - trapped Zubin Surkari and Ashish Bagai leg-before, while bowling Shaheed Keshvani and Khurram Chohan cheaply, before Borren and Seelar returned to mop up the tail and record a thrilling win for Netherlands.
Borren was one of the stars with the bat for Netherlands, too, with 50 from 45 while Alexei Kervezee top-scored with 75 from 111. Ryan ten Doeschate chipped in with 35.

Scotland level series with five-wicket win
|
Canada 250/9 (50 ov, Dhaniram 92, Drummond 4-41)
Scotland 253/5 (50 ov, G. Hamilton 59, Watson 74)
Scotland win by five wickets
ESPN/CricInfo - Half-centuries from three Scotland batsmen helped the hosts beat Canada by five wickets at Mannofield Park in Aberdeen. Chasing a target of 250, Gavin Hamilton, Ryan Watson and Neil McCallum guided the chase superbly to secure victory in the 48th over and level the series 1-1.
Canada's batsmen had chased down a large total on Tuesday but they were unable to reproduce a powerful performance after winning the toss. Their top-order batsmen struggled and Gordon Drummond struck thrice with the new ball to reduce the visitors to 28 for 3.
The middle-order batsmen rallied around Sunil Dhaniram and revived the innings. Dhaniram was the rock, scoring 92 before he was caught of Alasdair Evans, and he received support from Ashish Bagai and Khurram Chohan who made 31 and 35 respectively. Canada eventually recovered to finish on 250 for 9 with Drummond being the stand-out bowler, having taken 4 for 41.
Scotland's chase began badly with Fraser Watts being run out in the first over without facing a ball. Hamilton, however, help up one end, even after Navdeep Poonia fell for 10, and added 96 for the third wicket with Watson. Hamilton eventually fell for 59 but Watson found a steady partner in McCallum and the pair's 86-run partnership sealed the game for Scotland. Watson was eventually stumped for 74 but McCallum was unbeaten on 79 when the winning runs were scored.

Americas U19 - Day 3
|
Both Canada and the USA won their games on Day 3 to remain unbeaten at the U19 Americas Championship. The two teams are scheduled to play each other on Friday which now shapes up as the biggest game of the tournament.
Canada as expected won easily over Argentina by a margin of 269 runs. The home squad won the toss and elected to bat no doubt to give their middle order some practice as the first two games resulted in nine and eight wicket victories with the top order getting the job done. Again today it was Hiral Patel with his tournament leading 3rd half century that set the pace. His innings of 55 puts him on top of all batsmen with 179 scored in three games. Canada's skipper Rustum Bhatti was top scorer with 65, all rounder Nitesh Kumar the youngest player on the squad contributed 61 and opening bowler A.Qadir made a nifty 51. Canada's innings closed at 344/9 in 50 overs. Argentina in reply could only score 76.

|
Scotland 286/4 (50 ov, G. Hamilton 119, D. Watts 101)
Canada 287/4 (48.4 ov, S. Jyoti 117, A. Bagai 92*)
Canada wins by 6 wickets - Lead 2 match series 1-0
Scotland's batting innings got off to a flying start with both openers, Gavin Hamilton 119 and Fraser Watts 101 scoring centuries. Canada managed to take only four Scottish wickets, before they reached a total of 286/4 from 50 overs. Khurram Chohan took 2 wickets for 56 runs.
Canada's reply was steady, despite losing Ashif Mulla and Zubin Surkari to LBW decisions on 0 and 1 respectively. Rizwan Cheema 47* and Sandeep Jyoti continued the chase with an 83 run partnership. However, the crucial partnership came between Jyoti and skipper Ashish Bagai, who put on 146 runs to bring the target within reach. After Jyoti was dismissed for 117, Bagai 92* carried on with Sunil Dhaniram 13* to reach the target with 8 balls to spare.

Americas U19 - Day 2
|
Bermuda, Canada and USA maintained its winning streak on Day Two of the ICC Americas U/19 Regional Qualifier in Toronto on Tuesday. With only two places available to progress to the ICC Global Qualifier, the three teams will soon begin to feel the pressure and that could come as early as Wednesday when Bermuda tangles with USA.
Electing to bat first, Bahamas found the Canadian bowling difficult to get away with and even though they defended well they were unable to force the bowlers off the line and were all out for 118. Orlando Stuart scored an impressive 31 for his team. Canada?s Nitesh Kumar captured 3-18 while Riayzhan Pathan took 2-19 and Hiral Patel finished with 2-27.
Canada was once again impressive in the chase as its top order ensured a good opening. Patel (79) posted another half century, his second in two matches to help his side post the required runs in 16.3 overs. He was the obvious pick for Man of the Match as Canada coasted to a nine-wicket victory.

Americas U19 - Day 1
|
The three top ranked countries overpowered their opposition on the opening day of the Americas Region U19 Championship.
A long wet summer in Toronto made conditions very difficult for the grounds crew at Maple Leaf Cricket Club, but once again under the supervision of grounds manager Austin Ward , three excellent pitches were provided for day one of this very important tournament.
Game 3 was also an easy victory for one of the favourites of the tournament the host country Canada. Cayman Islands won the toss and elected to bat . The Canadians wasted no time in sending back two key batsmen , skipper Ramon Sealy and Darren Cato with only 16 runs on the board. Pace bowler Arsalan Qadir took three wickets for 26 runs while Zain Mahmood kept the slide going capturing three wickets for fours. Top scorers for Cayman were Zachary McLaughlin (20) and Sacha DeAlwis (28). Canada had no difficulty chasing the modest score of 84 with the openers Hiral Patel (53) and Ruvindu Gunasekera (20) sharing an unbeaten opening partnership of 85 runs in just 8.4 overs. Zain Mahmood was named player of the game for his fine bowling spell of 7.2-4-team innings to top score with 32 not out. For his brilliant innings of 73 Henry Wardley was named Player of the Match.

Six Americas sides aim for global qualifier
|
Six countries of the ICC Americas Region will play in the Pepsi ICC Americas U19 Championship which takes place at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club from Monday July 6th to Saturday July 11th.
Argentina, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands and the USA make up Division One of the Americas U19 Development Programme.
The top two teams in the round robin standings will advance to the newly formed Global qualifier to be played September 1st-13th, hosted by Cricket Canada. From this 10 team tournament the top six will advance to the U19 2010 World Cup.
Bermuda (2008) the USA (2006) and Canada (2002, 2004) have all represented the region with modest success in previous World Cups. The 2002 World Cup in New Zealand saw current Canadian senior captain Ashish Bagai smashed a boundary on the last ball of the innings to secure a tie against full member Bangladesh. In 2006 the USA defeated Namibia and in the last WC, Bermuda's Chris Douglas was a one man wrecking crew against the Irish. For the first time ever two teams from the Americas could actually qualify to play in the World Cup under the new pathway designed by the ICC, but first, one step at a time.

Scotland defeat Canada at Intercontinental Cup
|
Scotland 185 and 199 (Stander 64, Cheema 3-39) beat
Canada 142 and 213 (Jyoti 47, Keshvani 34, Barnett 31) by 29 runs
ESPN/CricInfo - Sandeep Jyoti's 47 and a stalwart's innings from Geoff Barnett nearly took Canada to an impressive and unlikely win on the third day against Scotland at Aberdeen, but Callum MacLeod and the rest of his side held their nerve to record a 29-run win in the first match of the 2009-10 ICC Intercontinental Cup.
Canada were set 243 to win after Scotland's innings ended on 199 yesterday evening, and the home side continued their dominance of the match by picking up four early wickets. Jan Stander, whose 64 yesterday was so crucial, had Trevor Bastiampillai caught in the slips, as was Qaiser Ali who edged Callum MacLeod for just 3. When Sunil Dhaniram offered a simple return catch to the economical Richie Berrington, Canada had stumbled to 60 for 4.

Scotland sets Canada 243 runs target in Aberdeen
|
Scotland 185 (Gordon Drummond 52, Ryan Watson 37, Simon Smith 29 not out, Fraser Watts 21; Khurram Chohan 6-37, Kenry Osinde 2-63) and 199 (Jan Stander 64, Gordon Drummond 34; Rizwan Cheema 3-39, Khurram Chohan 3-50, Shaheed Keshvani 2-20)
Canada 142 (Rizwan Cheema 24, Khurram Chohan 23 not out; Calum MacLeod 4-66, Jan Stander 3-43, Drummond 2-22)
A gutsy rearguard action for the second time in the match gave former champion Scotland an upper hand over Canada after two days of the non-stop entertainment in the opening match of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-10 at Mannofield Park, Aberdeen on Friday.
Scotland, in its second innings, was bowled out just before the close of play on the second day at 199 with wicketkeeper Simon Smith unable to bat after dislocating his shoulder while playing football as warm-up just before the start of the second day's proceedings. He will take no further part in the match and his participation in the ODIs against Canada on 7 and 8 July in Aberdeen is also doubtful.
Earlier, Canada resumed its first innings at 108-7 in reply to Scotland's 185, and was dismissed for 142 to concede a 43-run first innings. Canada will start its second innings on Saturday, requiring 243 runs for victory with two complete days at its disposal.

Canada (1st innings) 108-7 (Rizwan Cheema 21 not out; Calum MacLeod 2-49, debutant Jan Stander 2-27, Gordon Drummond 2-22)
Canada fast bowler Khurram Chohan took 6-37 as Scotland was bowled out for 185 as 17 wickets fell on the opening day of the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-10 match at the Mannofield Park, Aberdeen on Thursday.
The 29-year-old paceman bowled with fire and venom to destroy Scotland's middle and lower middle-order which had collapsed to 102-8 after electing to bat first. At this stage, newly-appointed captain Gordon Drummond and wicketkeeper Simon Smith put on 83 runs for the ninth wicket to save Scotland's blushes.

Sennik to Retire from Cricket Canada Presidency Post
|
TORONTO, May 28, 2009 - After overseeing a successful five-year tenure at the helm of Cricket Canada, President Ben Sennik announced today that he will be retiring from his volunteer role within Canada's national sport federation, effective June 30, 2009.
"This was not an easy decision," said Sennik. "However, after reviewing what we have been
able to jointly achieve, and recognizing what lies ahead for all of us on the cricket scene, I
believe the time is now right for me to pass the responsibility as President of Cricket Canada to
other hands."
Following his appointment in 2003, Sennik was tasked with molding Cricket Canada into a
successful and viable organization. Under Sennik's leadership, Canada has reclaimed its place as one of cricket's leading Associate nations, both on and off the field. Among the organization's highlights over the past five years are the following:
Securing a berth in the 2007 and 2011 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup
Finishing as runners-up in the 2004 and 2006 Intercontinental Cup
Reaching the finals of the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier
2008 and 2009 ICC America's Women's Champions
2008 ICC America's U15 Champions
Developing long term partnerships with several corporate partners including Scotiabank as Premier National Sponsor, ATN and Kukri
Securing funding and recognition from the Government of Canada
Securing the hosting of rights to several major international ICC events including the 2012 Under-19 World Cup of Cricket
An ever passionate supporter of the sport, Sennik's first foray into cricket remains one of Canada's most successful initiatives. In 1989, Sennik initiated and chaired the first United Way cricket match at Toronto's SkyDome. The event raised more than $800,000 (CDN), the largest single-day fundraising achievement in the history of the United Way Toronto.
Richard Done, the International Cricket Council's High Performance Manager was complimentary of Sennik's contributions to the game in the country saying, "I fully appreciate the time and commitment that Ben Sennik has put into building the game in Canada. Under his leadership Canada has developed from its voluntary base to start a new professional era both on and off the field. The National Team has qualified for its third successive ICC Cricket World Cup, the number of schools playing the game is growing, financially the sport is on a sound footing and Cricket Canada has again successfully hosted events involving a number of Full Members during 2008. I would like to personally thank Ben for his contribution. He is leaving the game in Canada with a solid base that will allow others to build the game further over the coming years."

ICC Americas Women's Championship - Day 5
|
A rainout with Argentina this afternoon secured Canada's position as the leading Women's team
in the America's region. The 6 day event in the USA has been highlighted by some exciting play
but the honours have certainly belonged to the Canadian Women. Defeating both the USA and
Bermuda in the opening round T20 Competition where they again convincingly defeated the host nation.
Canada had several starring performances in the week, led by Mona Persaud (71 and 3-32)
against the USA, and Sheryl Tittlemier (21* in both T20 victories) all played crucial roles in big
victories.
Canada's performances have gained recognition as Joanna White, Meara Crawford, Persaud, and Tittlemier all earned positions on the tournament all-star teams. The team will take on the
Trinidad and Tobago development squad on Saturday.

ICC Americas Women's Championship - Day 3
|
Canada 178-9, 40 overs (Mona Persaud 71)
USA 138 all out, 37 overs (Doris Francis 39, Candacy Atkins 35; Joanna White 3-22, Mona Persaud 3-32)
Canada won by 40 runs
Defending champions Canada took a big step towards retaining its title in the ICC Americas Women's Championship in Florida, USA with a solid 40-run victory over its North American rivals USA. Adding importance to the victory was that it also moved Canada closer to a place in the ICC Americas Qualifiers to maintain its ICC Women's World Cup dream.
Canada will next play the revelation of the tournament Argentina on Friday, while USA will face the South Americans tomorrow at Brian Picollo Park. Although having lost to Argentina in the T20 phase of the tournament, USA will still be considered the favourites to win what is for them the last chance to finish in the top two. An Argentine victory tomorrow will simply eliminate USA from any success in the event.
Having been put on to bat, Canada compiled a respectable total of 178-9 in their allotted 40 overs, thanks largely to an excellent innings of 71 from Mona Persuad. The Canadian number four faced 88 balls and struck three fours, and received some support from Sheryl Tittlemier, who made 20 in 38 balls, sharing in a vital fourth wicket partnership of 48 runs after Canada had been reduced to 57-3 at one stage.
In reply, USA made a fine start to their run chase, as Doris Francis (39 in 72 balls, one four) and Candacy Atkins (35 in 53 balls, two fours) put on 56 for the third wicket, putting their team in a strong position at 101-3. However the middle and lower order batters could not maintain the challenge, and USA was all out for 138 in 37 overs.
Canada captain, Joanna White (3-22 in six overs) and player of the match Mona Persaud (3-32 in five overs) were the main wicket takers, as the last seven USA wickets fell for a mere 37 runs.
John L. Aaron - There was no neighborly love lost yesterday as Canada and the USA did battle in the ICC-Americas Women's Cricket tournament now being played in Florida. The USA with a somewhat fledgling XI came up against a very formidable and well-prepared Cricket Canada Women's XI in the first of the 40 overs matches of the tournament.
Winning the toss and electing to field the USA women were give 179 as the target for victory over their Canadian neighbors, however, a fit Canadian XI proved too much for the Americans, racing to 178 for 9 in 40 overs, largely behind a 56-run partnership between M. Persaud, 74 (4x4s) and S. Tittlemier, 22. Persaud was stumped off the bowling of pacer Joy Jones, but not before establishing a sound base for her team. Other Canadian top scorers were M. Wilson, 14, b. Doris Francis, K. Kolter, 12, run out by Doris Francis and M. Patel, 10, exiting via the same run-out route by D. Francis. M. Turkik also exited via a run-out with a brilliant return from J. Jones to the bowler C. Atkins.
Bowling for the USA, J. Jones had figures of 8-0-23-2, while I. Sutherland, C. Atkins, D. Francis and I. Mahabir each grabbed one wicket. The Canadian wickets fell at 26, 35, 59, 115, 132, 168, 178 and 178.
The USA expected Canada to be its biggest hurdle, so they were prepared to do battle; however, one of the players remarked that the only two members of the USA team not physically in pain at the conclusion of the match were the Manager and Coach. If the USA is to emerge anywhere near the winner's circle now, a lot would depend on Canada's remaining performance. The USA ladies battled in return but fell short by 38 runs, scoring 139 all out in 36 overs. An exciting 57-run partnership between Vice Captain Candacy Atkins, 36, and Doris Francis, 39 was not enough to climb over Canada, as four of the USA players entered and exited without numerically contributing to the team's tally.
Top scorer for the USA was all-rounder Doris Francis, 39 (1x4). It was a patient knock in the Dominican's hunt for runs, alongside her St. Lucian-America skipper Roselyn Emmanuel's 18 (1x4) and Joy Jones' contribution of 11. Bowling for Canada, M. Persaud 5-1-12-3 and J. White 6-0-22-3 did the damage with Desh grabbing one wicket and the USA's Isoline Sutherland exiting via a run-out. The USA wickets fell at 35, 37, 94, 102, 122, 133, 136, 137, 137 and 139. Francis' contribution with the ball, bat and her fielding must give the USA a glimmer of hope for the future, as she proved to be one of the fittest members of the USA XI.
Canadian M. Persaud's contribution of a strong and defiant 74 and coming back with the ball to grab 3 wickets for 12 runs was what undid the Americans, who do battle later this morning against nemesis Argentina whom they lost to in a thunderous weather-beaten Duckworth/Lewis Twenty20 on Tuesday. The USA will no doubt be looking to regain its composure and self-confidence in the tournament, but it is still left to be seen whether they have any gas left in the tank to complete the lap, in their own backyard.'

ICC Americas Women's Championship - Day 2
|
Earlier in the day, the final round of the T20 matches saw Canada ease past Bermuda by seven wickets, and the Trinidad & Tobago Development XI beat the USA by six wickets, at the Central Broward Regional Park grounds.
Bermuda were put in to bat and were soon in trouble, stumbling to 17-4, before fighting back to post a score of 70-7 in their 20 overs, largely thanks to an innings of 27 runs off 48 balls from Maryellen Jackson. Pick of the Canadian bowlers was seamer Deshanee Yahathugoda, who took 2-7 in her allotted four overs.
In reply, Canada started disastrously, losing its first two wickets for a mere six runs. But an assured third wicket partnership of 47 runs between Sheryl Tittlemeir (pictured left - 21 off 39 balls with two fours) and Monali Patel (16 not out off 28 balls) took Canada to the brink of victory, eventually claimed by reaching the target of 71 runs in 14.3 overs for the loss of three wickets.
Canada took on the Trinidad & Tobago Development XI in the T20 tournament final, with USA clashing with Argentina for third place, and Bermuda vs Brazil completing the final round of T20 matches.
In the final, the talented Trinidad & Tobago Development XI clinched the T20 title by virtue of a 23-run victory by the D/L method. Put in to bat, T&T made a strong 111-2 in their 20 overs, led by a fine 39 not out off 31 balls by Saroop, with all the batters getting into double figures.
In reply, Canada was 31-2 off 10.4 overs when the game was stopped due to rain and with no further play possible, the result was predictably determined for a comfortable and deserved T&T victory.

Canada to host the ICC U/19 CWC Global Qualifier
|
The ICC Development Committee decided on the following locations for upcoming events:
- The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 5 (due to take place in January 2010) will be held in Nepal.
- The Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 4 (due to take place in June 2010) will be held in Italy.
- Canada will host the ICC U/19 CWC Global Qualifier in September 2009, which will see 10 Associate and Affiliate teams (two from each of the ICC's five regions) battle for five places in the ICC U/19 CWC 2010.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been invited to host the ICC World Twenty20 2010 Qualifier later this year. The event, which is currently scheduled to take place in late October, will also be expanded from its previous staging, in Ireland in 2008.
In addition to featuring the six Associate and Affiliate teams with ODI status ? Ireland, Canada, Kenya, the Netherlands, Afghanistan and Scotland ? it will also include the host team and the United States of America (USA). The top two sides from the tournament will go forward to join the 10 ICC Full Members in next year?s main event, set to take place in the West Indies in April and May at three locations ? Barbados, Guyana and St Lucia.
The binding decisions of the ICC Development Committee in relation to these events are all subject to the finalisation of logistical and budgetary arrangements with the prospective hosts.

ICC Americas Women's Championship - Day 1
|
Argentina provided the fireworks on an entertaining first day of the second ICC Americas Women's Championship in Florida, USA - first with a gutsy performance against defending champions Canada, and then overwhelming Bermuda in stunning fashion to win by eight wickets. The other major highlight of the T20 competition was the debut of a spirited Brazilian team.
But it was Argentina which definitely grabbed the headlines of the day. In its opening match against Canada, Argentina was asked to bat first, and it compiled a respectable 76-6 in their allotted 20 overs. Opening batter Dirce Yuli top-scored with 23 runs, while captain Catalina Greloni weighed in with 17 not out. Pick of the bowlers for Canada was captain and all-rounder Joanna White, who took 2-9 in her four overs.
Canada eventually reached the target of 77 runs for the loss of only two wickets, but it took them 17.1 overs, and were it not for some uncharacteristic fielding lapses, Argentina might have pushed the run chase a little harder in the end. However, the performance of the South Americans had captured everyone's attention, and in its second game against Bermuda, the team gave everyone even more to talk about.
The big game of Day Two is now undoubtedly the clash between Canada and Bermuda, as the loser faces the prospect of not qualifying for the Division 1 40-over event later in the week for the title of ICC Americas Women's Championship, as well as the opportunity to perhaps qualify for the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifiers.
A Canada win will eliminate Bermuda, while a Bermudan victory will leave all three teams in the group (including Argentina) on one win apiece, which will then require a net run rate separation. In the other morning game, USA will take on Trinidad & Tobago to see who advances to the T20 final later in the day.

Cricket master - Dartmouth's Deonarine plays key role on national, provincial scene
|
Bhan Deonarine may be a year away from turning 80 but he?s as active as ever in the cricket community.
The Dartmouth resident is in his eighth year on the Canadian national cricket team selection committee, fourth as the chairman. He recently oversaw the selection process for the Canadian team that finished second at the World Cup qualifying tournament in South Africa. The result earned Canada a spot at the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
"It was a big job for us to select the team for the qualifier," Deonarine said. "We worked all year round. We looked at the players, we looked at the stats and everything else that goes into a selection process. But because we worked hard on that, we feel like we picked the right team because we qualified. We got the results we wanted."

Johnston and Porterfield shine as Ireland clinches the finals
|
Canada 185 (Bhatti 46, Johnston 5-14)
Ireland 188 for 1 (Porterfield 104*)
Ireland beat Canada by nine wickets
An all-round performance by the Irish team defeated Canada by nine wickets in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier at Centurion on Sunday. Right arm medium pacer Trent Johnston took 5-14 and skipper William Porterfield smashed an unbeaten century to guide Ireland to victory with more than seven overs to spare.
Winning the toss, Ireland sent Canada in to bat, which proved to be a wise decision. Canada struggled to face the Irish bowling attack led by Johnston, losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 92-7 at one stage. Umar Bhatti stabilised the score with his 46 runs in 75 balls even as his team was skittled out for 185 runs with two overs remaining.
In the second innings, skipper Porterfield smashed a captain?s knock with his unbeaten 104 runs in 124-balls complete with 12 boundaries to record an easy win by nine wickets. The Canadian bowling attack failed to threaten the batting order at any stage and keep the runs in check as Ireland coasted to a comfortable victory.

Cricket Canada Media Release

CANADA QUALIFIES FOR ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP
TORONTO, ONTARIO AND JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - April 19, 2009
The results of the last round of games at the ICC World Cup Qualifying Tournament in South
Africa have confirmed Canada's qualification for the 2011 Cricket World Cup to be hosted in Asia. Qualification comes courtesy of finishing in the top four of the tournament featuring the top twelve Associate countries of ICC (those nations which are below the major Test-playing
countries such as India, England, Australia and the West Indies).
Canada will be joined at the World Cup by three other Associate countries - Ireland, Holland and Kenya. This will mark the fourth time that Canada has appeared in the ICC World Cup - in 1979, 2003, 2007 and now 2011 - which is tied for the most appearances by any Associate member country of ICC.
Canada was in the tougher of two groups at the first stage of the qualifying tournament, and
over the course of the last two grueling weeks of cricket their record is an impressive six wins and only three losses, including victories over Kenya and Scotland, two of the favourites going into the tournament.
The Canadian team benefited from a wide range of individual performances through the
tournament with Sunil Dhaniram, John Davison and Geoff Barnett each contributing centuries in different games. Three other batsmen have also produced big scores and, importantly, quick scores, notably Ian Billcliff, Rizwan Cheema and captain Ashish Bagai.
Success in the bowling department was also spread through the squad with nine separate
bowlers taking wickets in the tournament. The bowling was led by the pace triumvirate of Umar Bhatti (10 wickets) , Henry Osinde (10 wickets) and Khurram Chohan (15 wickets) which ensured that opposition batsmen did not post big scores.
"...This has been a huge achievement by our boys; perhaps the greatest success in the recent history of Canadian cricket..." said Ben Sennik, President of Cricket Canada. "...I could not be more pleased with how everybody has performed. This is terrific news for Canadian Cricket and everyone who follows the sport in Canada. It shows that a team with the correct mix of proven experience and exciting new Canadian talent can go a very long way."
Contacted in South Africa after the last round of matches, national team coach Pubudu
Dasanayake said, "...many of the team gave up valuable personal vacation time from their jobs, and some even took unpaid leave to attend the training camp in Sri Lanka. They all benefited tremendously from working with world class coaches and the exposure to first class facilities. You can see the results..."
Pankaj Mehra, Director India and South Asian Markets at Scotiabank, the Premier National
Sponsor of Cricket Canada, was also keen to add his praise. "The Canadian team and the Board of Cricket Canada are to be congratulated on what they have achieved in qualifying for the next World Cup. I look forward to seeing their hard work pay off in 2011 in Asia."
Thousands of cricket fans across Canada will now also be eagerly awaiting 2011.

Canada's bid to make cricket World Cup to be decided Friday
|
Canadian Press - Canada's bid to qualify for the 2011 Cricket World Cup is going down to the wire. The Canadians could have booked their ticket with a win Wednesday at the ICC World Cup Qualifier, but lost to United Arab Emirates by five wickets at the Stan Friedman Oval.
A win Friday over the Netherlands will secure qualification - and the Canadians could still qualify with a loss if they do well with the bat since run rate is a tiebreaker at the tournament. The loss left Canada with eight points in the Super Eight standings. Tournament favourite Ireland, which beat the Netherlands by six wickets Wednesday, improved to 10 points atop the table and earned its World Cup berth.
Kenya, the Netherlands and the Emirates all have six points with one game remaining. Those three teams and Canada are jostling for the final three World Cup openings.
"We're not happy, but these teams are rated under us," said manager Mike Henry. "We have a good chance (Friday) if we keep the game close."

In other Super Eight matches, Ireland 196 were surprised by Afghanistan 218-7; Namibia 280-7 defeated UAE 231-9; Scotland 216-8 defeated European rivals Netherlands 190.

Davison Out for Tournament
|
Cricket Canada is confirming today that all rounder John Davison has suffered a leg injury and
will be out approximately 3-4 weeks. The nature of the injury and duration of the recovery is
such that Davison has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2009 ICC Cricket World Cup
Qualification Tournament in South Africa. Through 5 games Davison is the 5th leading run scorer in the tournament with 223 runs at an average of 46.60. His highest score was 131 which came in the win over Namibia. Davison also has 2 wickets and a catch.
Canadian Manager Mike Henry was reflective on Davison's loss "John is a great player and has
had a fantastic tournament for us...we will miss his contribution on the field...we are fortunate to
have other players that can step in and contribute and we are confident that they will do so"
Cricket Canada has applied to the tournament technical committee, for Davison to be removed
from Canada's squad as he is no longer able to participate in the tournament and a replacement
will be named shortly. Canada's next game is Saturday April 11 against Kenya.

Canada Crush Scotland - Advance to Super Eights with 4 points

Canada 252-7 (50 overs, Bagai 91, Dhaniram 41, Wright 3-23)
Scotland 104 (30.5 overs, Smith 43, Bhatti 3-31)
Canada beat Scotland by 148 runs
CP - Fast bowler Umar Bhatti ripped through the Scottish batting attack as Canada defeated Scotland by 148 runs in its final round-robin game at the ICC World Cup Qualifying cricket tournament in South Africa.
Canada (4-1) had already qualified for the Super Eight round but Wednesday's win means the Canadians will take four points out of a possible six with them into the next stage. Teams carry forward points gained against other countries that advance to the Super Eight.
Scotland won the toss and sent Canada in to bat at Willowmoore Park. After opener Geoff Barnett (21), Rizwan Cheema (0) and Ian Billcliff (3) were dismissed, captain Ashish Bagai steadied the innings with an 87 that included eight fours and one six. The score brought Bagai to 1000 ODI Runs.
Sunil Dhaniram added 41 and John Davison 32 as Canada scored 252 runs in its 50 overs. Canada's pace duo of Bhatti and Henry Osinde tore into the Scottish batsmen, reducing the Scots from 19 for zero to 29 for four. Scotland (3-2) could manage just 104 runs in response, running out of wickets in the 31st over. Colin Smith accounted for 43 of those runs.

Canada Suffers First Loss of CWCQ to Ireland
|
Canada 220 (Barnett 49, Davison 41, Rankin 2-36)
Ireland 223 for 4 (O'Brien 89*, Morgan 84*)
Ireland beat Canada by six wickets
Impressive Irish batting under pressure brings about Canada's first defeat in Group A. Kevin O'Brien and Eoin Morgan rescued Ireland from a precarious position to maintain their team's 100 per cent record in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier with victory over Canada at Benoni today....
...Previously unbeaten in the tournament the Canadians knew they did not have enough runs on what was a good batting surface. Geoff Barnett (49), John Davison (41) and Ian Billcliff (38) all got good starts without being able to capitalise, especially considering the Irish fielding early on was uncharacteristically loose as they dropped four catches and missed a stumping.
But Canada coach Pubudu Dassanayake remained upbeat afterwards, comfortable in the knowledge that his side was already through to the Super Eight stage. "In the morning when we were batting we got a good start despite a bit of juice on the wicket early on but then we didn't go through well. We lost a bit of momentum and then Ireland put pressure on us to restrict our scoring.
"But we will regroup after this and come back well in our next game against Scotland. We are capable of beating them. We are still very confident we come back hard and collect those two points to bring through into the next round," he said.

Canada 232-5 (47.0 overs, G Barnett 102*, S Dhaniram 39)
Canada beat Uganda by 5 wickets
CricInfo - Canada registered their second win on the trot beating Uganda by five wickets in Johannesburg. Geoff Barnett's century helped Canada overhaul a target of 232 in the 47th over after Khurram Chauhan had starred with the ball, picking up 3 for 31. Uganda looked to be struggling with half the side gone for 91, but Kenneth Kamyuka's near run-a-ball 85, with five fours and two sixes, pushed them to a competitive total. During the chase, Barnett steadied the Canadian innings after Kamyuka's early strikes and was well supported in two fifty-plus partnerships by captain Ashish Bagai (33) and Sunil Dhaniram (39). He remained unbeaten on 102 off 123 balls, hitting nine boundaries and a six.

Cricket Canada president excited about future
|
Toronto Sun - Ben Sennik has seen his leadership as president of Cricket Canada questioned, he's had his authority challenged, his decisions maligned and watched three members of the board walk out the door in the past year amidst a swirling controversy.
This week Sennik addressed the politics and in-fighting. It's murky. "Unfortunate," he said. But, all the bitching aside, he does guarantee one thing:
"We're going to the World Cup in 2011," he guaranteed, as the national team prepares for the International Cricket Council World Cup qualifiers, now less than a month away: "Four teams will go (to the World Cup from the tournament)," said Sennik, this week. "One of those four will be Canada."

Atapattu's appointment will be effective immediately and will run until the conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier April 1-18 in South Africa.
