Toronto Star Reviews 2008

Faraz Sarwat - This was an interesting year for cricket in Canada. The sport grew in profile and, after almost 10 years in the wilderness, Canada again hosted full-member ICC countries. But the higher profile coincided with the national team having a poor year on the field. A rundown of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Article Regarding Proposed T20 League
|
Times of India: Cricket, which once was the official sport of Canada, has staged a major comeback in the past 12 months. The Canadian government had recognized cricket as a national sport, with promises of federal funding. Under its new governing body, Cricket Canada, the sport attracted top banks and corporates as sponsors.
Thanks to sponsorships by Scotiabank, Canada staged its first T20 national league in May and the Scotiabank triangular series featuring West Indies, Bermuda and the hosts in August. In October, it staged the world's first Twenty20 Canada Cup quadrangular series featuring Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and the hosts.
"This is just the beginning. Like the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America, we now plan a multi-city league to take cricket to the masses," Canada Cricket CEO Atul Ahuja said.

Canada aim for full strength at World Cup Qualifiers
|
Tony Munro - Canada intend to field their best possible team at the World Cup Qualifiers in April, according to Cricket Canada CEO Atul Ahuja. Canada were without their overseas-based players during the recent Americas Championship and finished third on run-rate, behind the United States and Bermuda.
"We're not pretending that was anything like our best team in Florida, it wasn't even our A team or B team. But when the World Cup Qualifiers come around we will be looking to have our best team on the field," Ahuja told Cricinfo.

Toronto Star Article on Canada's Recent Tour
|
Faraz Sarwat (Toronto Star) - In spite of being battered around in Guyana during the WICB Cup, which is the West Indies domestic One-Day championship, Canada embarked to Florida last week to take part in the ICC Americas Division 1 Championship with high hopes of winning the trophy. The tournament is for ICC Associate countries, so none of the countries that comprise the West Indies participate. That was good news for Canada after recent heavy losses to Leeward Islands (by 184 runs), Jamaica (by 9 wickets) and Guyana (by 7 wickets).
Bermuda, which like Canada has ODI status, was considered the only real threat to Canada's title hopes, which allowed the USA to catch both teams off guard.

Day 5: USA claim Americas title
|
In a rain-interrupted match at Brian Piccolo Park, USA clinched the title with an 87-run win Cayman Islands, thus finishing their campaign unbeaten. A commanding opening stand of 194 between Sushil Nadkarni and Carl Wright put the USA firmly in the driving seat, with Wright going on to make a brilliant 112 from 105 balls. Nadkarni, the player of the tournament, made 84 from 103 balls with 10 fours. Kevon Bazil bowled well in difficult conditions to take 4 for 75 as USA reached 289 for 6 in 49 overs. Rain interruptions curtailed Cayman Islands' response and the match was eventually called to a halt with them struggling on 65 for 4 in the 24th over.
At the Central Broward Regional Park stadium in Lauderhill, the eagerly awaited clash between Bermuda and Canada was eventually abandoned late in the day with no result possible. Showers and lashing winds scuppered any chance of completing the match. Canada reached 190 for 6 in their 42 overs, while Bermuda's chase was cut short with the score on 53 for 1.

Day 4: USA defeat Canada to move within sight of title
|
USA took a significant step towards the 2008 Americas championship with an 81-run victory over Canada at Central Broward Regional Park. In what was in reality a see-saw battle, with periods of holding the upper hand for both sides, it was the USA perseverance and determination that saw them through critical periods of play. The result leaves USA needing to beat Cayman Islands to win the title.
After winning the toss, the USA were soon 3 for 2, Sushil Nadkarni and Lennox Cush both falling to Umar Bhatti. Despite some repair work from Carl Wright (40) and captain Steve Massiah (22), at 89 for 6 after 29 overs, they were still in trouble. But Aditya Thyagarajan and Orlando Baker then added 105 in 20 overs, and steered USA to 201 for 8. Thyagarajan finished unbeaten on 84, made from 99 balls, while Baker was 38 not out.
In reply, Canada made a slow but steady start, with Sandeep Jyoti (40) and Asif Mulla putting on 44 for the first wicket, but once they had been separated the innings fell away as Orlando Baker (5 for 31) ripped through the middle order, the last eight wickets falling for 42. He received excellent support from Imran Awan (3 for 14 from 8.5 overs) and Sudesh Dhaniram (1 for 10 in 9 overs).

Day 3: Canada too much for Suriname
|
Canada predictably had too much ammunition for Suriname in a comfortable 206-run victory, although they had a few testing moments after slipping to 168 for 7 despite Asif Mulla's 100 off 127 balls. It was left to the lower order to lift Canada to a strong total of 269 for 9, with captain Umar Bhatti making 37 and Eion Katchay contributing a hard-hitting 48 off 32 balls.
Suriname capitulated to 18 for 7 in reply, another example of how they have been completely outclassed in the tournament. Bhatti did most of the damage with 6 for 15, but the quality of the opposition has to be taken into consideration.
And Bhatti was quick to admit there are still areas to improve on. "We performed reasonably well, although there are no excuses for our batting, we should have scored more runs. There are two big games over the weekend, and it's important our top and middle order find more consistency."

Day 2: Canada step up a gear to overwhelm Cayman Islands by 206 runs
|
On the Central Broward Regional Park B Field, Canada racked up an impressive 298 for 9 in 50 overs, with their top order firing on all cylinders. Opener Sandeep Jyoti top-scored with a stylish 88 off 129 balls, including 8 fours and a six, while two further half-centuries came from Zubin Surkari, 62 off 54 balls, 7 fours and 2 sixes, and Qaiser Ali, with 61 off 76 balls, with 4 fours and a six. Karun Jethi also weighed in with a whirlwind 37, scored off just 20 balls, with 3 fours and 3 sixes.
For the Cayman Islands, Alessandro Morris took 3 for 68 in 10 overs, while Ryan Bovell took 2 for 53 in his set of 10 overs. Disaster struck for the Cayman Islands, losing a wicket off the very first ball of their reply, a setback from which they were never really able to recover. Eventually bundled out for a mere 92 in 33,2 overs, only Steve Gordon showed some resistance of substance, making 24 from 68 balls, with 3 fours. Destroyers in chief for Canada were Khurram Chohan, who took 3 for 34 in 8 overs, and Zahid Hussain, with 3 for 11. Eion Katchay also bowled well to take 2 for 24 in his 8 overs.
Canadian captain Umar Bhatti was delighted with his teams return to form: "We set ourselves goals today and I believe we achieved almost all of them. The team performed tremendously well today, all three departments were up to scratch, and it was a huge improvement from yesterday."

Canada's Henry Osinde talks to Cover Point ahead of a busy few weeks for Canada
|
|
In Canada's strong bowling performances at the Al-Barakah T20 Tournament in October, Henry Osinde impressed more than most. The tall seam bowler generated bounce that troubled both Pakistan and Zimbabwe, and Geoff Lawson, then Pakistan coach, singled him out for praise. Nevertheless, Osinde sees himself as the spearhead of Canada's pace attack, and wanted more. "I'd say I achieved 85% to 90% of what I wanted to do," he admits, as Canada prepare to fly to Guyana to play in the West Indies domestic one-day competition. "For the team I am the strike bowler, I always take wickets. But I wasn't really taking wickets, I was just containing."

Americas Division 1: Bermuda and Canada start favourites
|
CricInfo - Bermuda will be aiming to retain their ICC Americas Division 1 Championship title when the tournament begins in Lauderhill, Florida, on Tuesday.
They will be joined in the regional event by hosts USA, Canada, Cayman Islands, Argentina and Suriname, who are playing in the top tier for the first time. Suriname earned their spot after winning the Division 2 event earlier this year. However, their build-up has been hampered when a number of their squad were refused US visas.
Bermuda and Canada will start as clear favourites as they both have recent exposure to one-day and Twenty20 internationals. Although matches between the six leading Associates are officially classed as ODIs, this meeting won't carry that title as the ground hasn't received ICC approval.

CricketWorld Interview: Cricket Canada CEO Atul Ahuja
|
When we talk about world cricket there is often a tendency to focus on the Test playing nations. However, cricket is fast becoming a more global sport, and many of the Associate nations have plans in place in order to reach the level of the big boys in the near future.
While I was in Toronto, I spoke to Atul Ahuja, The CEO of Cricket Canada and he spoke to me at length about the state of cricket in Canada, long and short-term goals for Canadian cricket, and how he believes Canada is capable of hosting an event such as the IPL.
Ahuja told me that cricket in Canada is "alive and well" and it?s only a matter of time before the game becomes a professional sport:

Canada falls to Jamaica at WICB Cup
|
Saturday: Trinidad and Tobago vs Canada - No play due to rain.
Canada v Jamaica at Georgetown
Jamaica 108/1 (20.5 ov) defeated Canada 104 (36.5 ov) by 9 wickets (with 175 balls remaining)
It was a complete demolition job at Bourda as Canada crashed to 104 and lost by nine wickets against Jamaica. Seamer Andrew Richardson led Jamaica's inspired effort by taking 4 for 36 after the opposition captain Sunil Dhaniram chose to bat. Canada were sent packing half an hour before lunch and Jamaica, needed just 21 overs to get home.
Canada's openers began steadily by adding 25. However, Richardson started the slide when he had Abdool Samad and Qaiser Ali caught behind by Keith Hibbert of successive deliveries. Hibbert, the wicketkeeper, had an excellent match with six catches, including three off the bowling of Richardson, who managed a lot of lateral movement. Only Dhaniram offered some resistance, top scoring with 24. The spinners Bevon Brown and Grant Wallace took two wickets apiece as to bundle out Canada in the 37th over. Parchment (50*) and Bernard (40) shared an unbeaten stand of 81 to help Jamaica gain two bonus points.

|
CricInfo - He may play for Canada but he's drawing favourable comparisons with the big boys of international cricket thanks to his ability to clear the boundary at will.

Sun Shines on Canada T20 Quadrangular - Cover Point
|
|
Mother Nature must have a soft spot for Canadian cricket. Autumn has long since commenced in Southern Ontario, the nights are drawing in, and the leaves have turned the spectacular reds, golds and yellows that characterise the Canadian Fall. Yet for the new T20 Canada tournament, King City, 35km from downtown Toronto, enjoyed four days of perfect 20C sunshine. Only time will tell the importance of this unseasonal weather, but there's no doubt it helped bless the bold new era in Canadian cricket with the best of starts.

Al Barakah T20 Canada 2008 - Finals
|
Championship Final: Sri Lanka 133 for 5 (Jayasuriya 40, Kapugedera 17*) beat Pakistan Pakistan 132 for 7 (Butt 44, Mendis 3-23) by 5 wickets
Sanath Jayasuriya cracked 44 and Ajantha Mendis took three wickets as Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the T20 Canada.
A Twenty20 round-robin in Canada does little to set hearts fluttering. Yet when Shoaib Akhtar steams in to bowl at Sanath Jayasuriya and company, the venue is of little importance. Unfortunately for Pakistan, Akhtar has yet to rediscover his accuracy, and it was Jayasuriya who won the battle, consequently leading Sri Lanka to a convincing five-wicket win in the final of the T20 Canada at King City.
3rd Place Playoff: Zimbabwe 184 for 5 (Masakadza 79) beat Canada 75 (Samad 25, Utseya 3-26) by 109 runs.
Canada may lack the might and skill of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but Zimbabwe don't often have the opportunity to rout opposition. That's exactly what they achieved today, however, thrashing Canada by 109 runs and, in doing so, winning the third-place playoff in the T20 Canada. It was an important win for Zimbabwe, not least because their opponents today forced a bowl-out in their last game.

Al Barakah T20 Canada 2008 - Day 3
|
Sri Lanka 153 for 7 (M. Jayawardene 35, B. Rao 3-21) defeat Canada 138 (R. Cheema 68, A Mendis 4-17) by 15 runs
Sri Lanka held their nerve to quell the plucky resistance of Canada, whose opener, Rizwan Cheema, struck an entertaining 43-ball 68 which so nearly caused an unlikely upset. Sri Lanka now face Pakistan, who earlier eased past Zimbabwe, in tomorrow's final.
Pakistan 110 for 3 (S. Khan 50, C. Mpofu 3-16) defeat Zimbabwe 107 for 8 (H. Masakadza 53, F. Alam 3-7) by 7 wickets and 6 balls remaining.
A mismatch on paper, a mismatch on the pitch. Pakistan romped to an easy seven-wicket win over Zimbabwe, knocking off the required 108 runs with Shoaib Khan Jr. stroking an even 50.
Zimbabwe briefly threatened to make it a contest thanks to an aggressive and uncomplicated 53 from Hamilton Masakadza, but none of his team-mates could match his ability in shot-selection. The next highest score was extras with 18, and against a batting side of the depth and natural strokeplay of Pakistan, their bowlers were equally unable to defend such a low total.

Match 3: Canada vs. Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field first.
Zimbabwe 135 for 9 (Taibu 37, Baidwan 3-27) tied with Canada 135 for 7 (20 ov, Cheema 23, Jethi 24) and won bowl-out 3-1
Zimbabwe earned a win they barely deserved, claiming a 3-1 victory in a bowl-out, after scrambling to a tie against Canada as the second day of T20 Canada tournament at King City produced a thrilling game. Zimbabwe, who slumped to 61 for 5 in the 11th over, recovered through a stand of 53 between Tatenda Taibu and Elton Chigumbura, but still needed 10 off the last over. Harvir Baidwan took two wickets in two balls, but Prosper Utseya and Tawanda Mupariwa squeezed nine off the next four balls, with Utseya run out off the final delivery trying to win the match.
Pakistan 141 for 7 (Malik 42*, Weeraratne 4-19) beat Sri Lanka 137 for 9 (Mubarak 39, Gul 4-13) by three wickets
Considering that cricket bats have normally been packed away at this time of year in Toronto, it is hardly surprising that the T20 Canada tournament is proving tough for batsmen, but Shoaib Malik and Fawad Alam combined in thrilling style to steal this match away from Sri Lanka with a ball to spare.

|
Sri Lanka 107 for 5 (Dilshan 33, Price 2-9) beat
Zimbabwe 106 for 8 (Taibu 45*, Mendis 3-15) by five wickets
Zimbabwe limped to 106 for 8 in the opening game of the T20 Canada tournament at Kings City after the match was reduced to 17 overs per side by a damp outfield. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 6 wickets and 6 balls remaining.
Pakistan 137 for 7 (Butt 74, Baidwan 3-15, Bhatti 3-23) beat
Canada 102 for 9 (Cheema 35, Shoaib 2-11) by 35 runs
Canada fought hard in the field, but were blown away when they batted as Pakistan cranked themselves into life after a sluggish start. Salman Butt provided more than half Pakistan's moderate total with 74 off 56 balls and for a while Canada presented a challenge in the chase, but in the end they subsided to 102 for 9.

Life beyond Davison
|
Five years after Canada made their biggest strides in world cricket they've realised it's homegrown players and expertise that will take them to the next level
Farwaz Sarwat - There was a warm glow around Canadian cricket after the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Expectations had not only been met, but exceeded, with the win against Bangladesh. Sweeter still was the performance of John Davison, whose form with the bat was simply exhilarating. His belligerent 111 against West Indies is now the stuff of legend. If there were such things as cricket posters in Canada, there's no doubt who the poster boy would be. Davison became Canadian cricket.

Scotiabank Series Match 3: West Indies vs. Canada
|
West Indies 303/4 (50 ov)
Canada 254 (47.2 ov)
Result West Indies won by 49 runs
Xavier Marshall hit a record 12 sixes in his maiden one-day international century to pace the West Indies to a 49-run victory over Canada in the Tri-Nation One-Day International series on Friday. Marshall also had 11 boundaries in his unbeaten 157, helping the West Indies to 303 for 4 in its 50 overs. Brendan Nash led the Caribbean islanders' bowling effort, taking 3 for 56 to dismiss the hosts for 254 in 47.2 overs. The 12 sixes, made off 118 balls and in 131 minutes, surpassed the 12-year-old limited overs international record of 11 sixes jointly held by Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya and Pakistani Shahid Afridi.
Rizwan Cheema led Canada's response. The Pakistani-born batsman, who was dropped at 18, 31 and 58, struck an explosive 89 off 69 balls with six sixes and 10 boundaries, gave Canada a slight chance of upsetting the two-time World Cup champions. However, once he was dismissed in the 19th over with the score at 126, the West Indies regained their composure and cruised to their second ODI win in as many matches against Canada.
"That was quite an innings by Rizwan," Canada captain Sunil Dhaniram said. "It gave us a chance. I think that a score of 250, however, would have been in our ball park. A total of 300 was stretching it a bit too far for us."
Medium-pacers Eion Katchay and Cheema were Canada's most economical and productive bowlers, conceding 56 runs in 20 overs for the four wickets that fell. Canada will meet West Indies in the final on Sunday.

Scotiabank Series Match 1: Canada vs. Bermuda
|
Canada 260-7 (50 overs)
Bermuda 235-8 (50 overs)
Result Canada won by 25 runs
ICC - Canada draw first blood in King City - It was an entertaining match at King City that saw Canada pick up a victory in the first match of the Scotiabank ODI Tri-Series. A match that had ebb and flow was everything that one-day cricket has to offer and there is promise for more going forward this week.
Canada got off to an explosive start, led by the powerful batting of Mohammad Iqbal and Rizwan Cheema - both recent additions to the national team. They came out throwing the bat and punished George O'Brien and Stefan Kelly in the early power play overs. The opening partnership made 53 runs in just 5.3 overs before Iqbal nicked a Kelly delivery into wicketkeeper Jekon Edness' gloves.
Dwayne Leverock was his usual stingy self, taking a wicket, bowling 3 maidens and conceding just 20 runs in his 10 over spell-ICC-Getty Images
Cheema fell victim to a bit of a rush of blood. After stroking his third maximum - a towering shot over long on and into the adjacent farmer's field - he played a bit too aggressively across the line of a Kelly yorker and was bowled. Ashish Bagai never got his eye in before edging a Dwayne Leverock ball to the keeper and Canada had suddenly slumped to 72 for 3 from 10.1 overs - a much less dominant position.

Canada and Ireland draw Intercontinental Cup Match in Ireland
|
Ireland 326/6d
Canada 141/5 (53.0 ov)
Result: Match Drawn (3 points each)
Canada's Geoff Barnett batting against Ireland in the drawn Intercontinental Cup match in Dublin. CricketEurope
Day 3 Review - Sunil Dhaniram's 70 from 90 balls steadied a wobbling Canada reply to Ireland's 326 for 6 on the third day of their Intercontinental Cup match at Dublin. Only 37 overs were possible, however, due to the Malahide mizzle. Canada resumed on a precarious 31 for 3, and a mid-morning capitulation looked to be on the cards when Qaiser Ali was caught behind off Peter Connell in the second over of the day. Connell took his second four overs later when he had Arvind Kandappah caught for just 5. Canada were tottering nowhere on 52 for 5. Yet all the while, Geoff Barnett did his best to anchor Canada's reply and stroked four fours in his unbeaten 35. It was left to the former captain, Dhaniram, to take the initiative and he did so with 12 fours and a six during a fine counterattacking fifty. Dublin's drizzle cut short play after 53 overs and, with one day to go, a draw seems the most inevitable result. Yet with the hosts, Scotland and Namibia all within touching distance in the table, tomorrow represents a good opportunity for Ireland to boost their points in the crowded top three.
Day 2 Review - An unbeaten century from Andrew White put Ireland into a strong position on a sunny day two of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada at Malahide on Friday.
With day one entirely washed out, it was important Ireland made the most of the more settled weather when it came. And it certainly made the most of that opportunity. The Irishmen scored 326-6 declared and then proceeded to take three Canadian wickets before the close to put themselves firmly in the box seat.

Canada defeat Bermuda for 5th Place
|
Bermuda 70 (20.0 overs)
Canada 71-2 (10.3 overs)
ICC - Canada defeated Bermuda by eight wickets in the fifth and sixth-place play-off in the penultimate match of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier at Stormont in Belfast, Ireland on Tuesday.
In overcast conditions, Canada put Bermuda into bat and bowled it out for 70 on the final ball of the 20th over. The North American side faced little problem in achieving victory in 10.3 overs. Geoff Barnett scored 31 not out with five fours and Ashish Bagai scored 15 not out after John Davison had hit a rapid 19 off 13 balls with two fours and a six. However, it was Steven Welsh who walked away with the man-of-the-match award after recording figures of 3-0-6-2.
Canada had started impressively in the tournament when it defeated the Netherlands before losing to Kenya. That result put all the three teams in Group B on equal points and Canada was left to play in the fifth and sixth-place play-off after failing to qualify for the semi-final on net run-rate.
Bermuda lost all the three matches in the tournament but its best chance came in the rain-curtailed match was against Ireland when it was left to chase a revised target of 46 in eight overs to earn a place in the last four stage. Bermuda lost the match by four runs on Duckworth-Lewis Method as Ireland qualified for the semi-final where it defeated Kenya to reach the final.

Canada falls to Kenya - Eliminated from WT20 Qualifier
|
Canada 91 (19.4 overs)
Kenya 92/6 (17.5 overs)
Canada won the toss and elected to bat. Canada had lost 6 wickets by the 10th over, with the score on 54. Skipper Sanjayan Thuraisingam (15 runs) and Karun Jethi (13 runs) tried to build a partnership to rescue the inning, however Canada struggled to 91 all out from 19.4 overs. Kenya proceeded with the run chase and got a valluable contribution from Kennedy Otieno (40 runs). Canada needed to hold off the Kenyans until 18.3 overs, but Kenya won by 4 wickets, with 13 balls to spare, and advance to semi-finals in 2nd place.
The result was a bitter blow to Canada which had defeated the Netherlands by four wickets on Saturday afternoon. The North American side will now play the fifth and sixth-place play-off match against the bottom-placed side from Group A - Bermuda.
Canada did itself no favours by failing to post a decent score after it had elected to bat first. After experienced John Davison fell in the fourth over, the rest of the batsmen fell at regular intervals and only captain Sanjay Thuraisingam (15), Karun Jethi (13) and Geoff Barnett (13) reached double figures.

Canada defeats Holland on Day 1 of WT20 Qualifier
|
The Netherlands 97 all out (18.4 overs)
Canada 98-6 (19.3 overs)
ICC- Canada defeated the Netherlands by four wickets but failed to stop the Dutch from qualifying for the semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier from Group B at Stormont in Belfast, Ireland on Saturday.
Canada achieved the 98-run target in 19.3 overs but it allowed the Netherlands, who defeated Kenya in the tournament opener by 19 runs, to maintain a positive net run-rate which will come into play if Kenya beats Canada on Sunday afternoon.
Kenya needs to beat Canada roughly by 12 runs or with nine balls to spare to secure a place in the last four though the exact calculations will only be made after the first innings of the match which starts at 1300 (local time).
Canada bowled accurately and fielded sharply to bowl the Netherlands out for 97 in 19.3 overs after the European side won the toss and elected to bat first. Fast bowler Harvir Baidwan, later named man of the match, bowled intelligently to grab 4-19 while Henry Osinde took 2-21.

|
Scotland 374 (130.5 overs)
Canada 79 (38.2 overs)
Canada 130 (58.3 overs)
Scotland won by an innings and 165 runs
CricketEurope - The third day of this match had an air of inevitability to it, with Canada resuming on 36 for 2, and still requiring 260 further runs to force Scotland to bat again. The only hope for the home side was to build a patient innings and bat out at least all of the day. Those hopes were dashed early, and Scotland earned themselves a day off by wrapping up the victory shortly after lunch.

ICC announces revised schedule for ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier
|
Includes third and fourth place play-off to cater for possibility of third team going forward to ICC WT20 2009
The ICC today announced the revised schedule for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier (WT20 Qualifier) in Belfast next month. The tournament, involving the six leading Associate teams - Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland - will now take place from 2 to 5 August, with a fourth day included to allow room for a third and fourth place play-off.
That additional fixture has become necessary because a third team will join the two finalists in next year's tournament, providing Zimbabwe Cricket?s board ratifies Zimbabwe's decision, taken during the ICC?s annual conference week, to step down from the ICC World Twenty20 2009*.

Canada vs. Scotland - Day 1
|
Scotland 286-3 (96.0 overs). Scotland has set itself up well on day one of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada at King City, Ontario, reaching stumps at 286-3.
It was not necessarily the most free-scoring of days but a 173-run partnership between Dougie Lockhart and Qasim Sheikh has really put the home side under pressure and the Canada players will know they will have to produce something special to turn it around.
Having dismissed captain and in-form batsman Fraser Watts for just 10, Canada would have felt it had a real chance but Lockhart and Qasim set about making sure that didn?t happen. Qasim eventually fell just eight runs short of would have been his maiden first-class century but Lockhart went on to reach three figures and ended the day unbeaten on 126.
Scotland's preparations for their Intercontinental Cup clash with Canada was thrown into disarray Monday by Hurricane Bertha. The Scots had been due to fly from Bermuda to Toronto in plenty of time for Wednesday's start. But the after-effects of the biggest Caribbean storm of the year left them stranded on the island for more than 24 hours. The hold-up left the Scots with no opportunity to get used to the different conditions in King City, Ontario.

Canada Lose by 106 Runs
|
Bermuda 237 (Outerbridge 79, Celestine 47, Dhaniram 4-70) and
248 (Romaine 84, Saad Bin Zafar 4-58, Dhaniram 4-36) beat Canada
228 (Billcliff 56, Kandappah 51, Leverock 5-69) and 151 (Katchay
29, Leverock 5-60, Trott 3-28) by 106 runs.
Canada had no answer to Dwayne Leverock's left-arm spin as his match haul of
10 for 129 guided Bermuda to a 106-run win at the Maple Leaf North-East ground.
Leverock almost matched his first-innings effort to finish with 5 for 60 to
hasten Canada's collapse to 151, on what was shaping to be an intriguing final
day. Day 3 was a see-saw day at King City, which saw Bermuda recover from a
deep hole in the morning, Canada fight back in the afternoon, and Bermuda end
up with their nose in front with some superb bowling in the last hour of the
day.

Toronto Star Editorial - Cricket's Comeback
|
|
History records 1867 not only as the time of Confederation but also the year cricket became our national sport. Sir John A. Macdonald, a visionary on matters both political and sporting, saw the future for the game of googlies and wickets born of the British Empire. Later generations of Canadians left cricket in the dust, seduced by North American passions for baseball, football and hockey; yet Sir John A. was clearly ahead of his time. Last month, the federal government granted formal recognition to cricket once again. To be sure, it will no longer be the sole national sport, merely one among many, with hockey and lacrosse now the undisputed winter and summer national sports, thanks to a 1994 Act of Parliament...

Scotiabank enables Cricket Canada to establish monthly Player Allowance Policy
|
The recent arrival of Scotiabank as Official Bank and Premier National Sponsor has enabled Cricket Canada to establish an unprecedented monthly player allowance policy effective July 1, 2008. The Scotiabank sponsorship has helped Canada move into a select league of Cricket-playing nations that are able to pay their players on a monthly basis. The amounts that Cricket Canada is being able to afford at this stage compared with nations like Australia, England, India and others, can be considered 'token' but indicate the resolve of the Management and the Executive Committee to support National Players in every possible way. The player allowance policy is tiered, currently based on factors like number of years on the national team, player attendance during season and off-season, among others. These and a host of other factors, including player performance during the 2008 season, will be considered when the next allowance review is done in January 2009.
Cricket Canada is working with the Federal Government to determine whether Cricket will be eligible for the Federal Government's Athlete Assistance Program (AAP). This will help increase allowance dollars when reviewed in January 2009.

Tobago fights back after dismissal start
|
|
ICC Americas - The Canadian women's cricket team was beaten Tobago by 3 wickets with just 10 balls to spare on Tuesday. Canada opted to bat first, scoring 167 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 40 overs. Captain Mona Persaud top-scored with the bat, compiling 42 runs not out. The largest contribution to the total came from some wayard Tobago bowling that gave away 81 runs in wides. In contrast to the rain and damp of Sunday's opening tour match, the sun pounded down on the Shaw Park, Scarborough, Tobago. Canada's opening bowlers, Joanna White and Meara Crawford each took 2 early wickets as the hosts tumbled to 20 runs for 4 wickets. Opening bat Erica George pulled things around during a partnership of 143 runs for the fifth Tobago wicket with Waveney Williams, who made 51 runs. Spinner Deshanee Yamathugoda chipped in with 2 wickets as Canada showed fighting spirit. But it was not quite enough and a boundary from George brought her score to 56 runs cemented the win for Tobago. Canada faces the Trinidad and Tobago Under 21 team at the University of the West Indies ground in St Augustine, Trinidad, on Thursday.

Move to reduce World Cup cricket teams opposed
|
|
Malaysia Sun (IANS) - The associate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) have opposed moves by India and Pakistan to reduce the number of teams at the next World Cup in 2011.
Since their elimination from the 2007 World Cup, the Asian cricketing giants have reportedly been pressuring the ICC to have 14, instead of proposed 16, teams at the next World Cup.
As ten full members cannot be shut out, the axe will fall on any two of the six associate members.
India and Pakistan may argue that reduction in teams will shorten the duration of the tournament, but what they actually want is reduce chances of their elimination at the preliminary rounds.
To ensure this, they have suggested only two groups of 14 teams, instead of the current four groups of four teams each.
