2007-11-15 Passing of Anil Lashkari
Cliff Cox, CCA - It is with great sadness that I advise the passing of a good friend Anil Lashkari on Nov 1st, 2007. We had three phases to our friendship which is most unsual in life. The first was when we he came from India and we both played as opponents in our early twenties in the Central Lancashire League in UK. Anil with Stockport and myself with Oldham, both as opening batsmen. We lost touch until years later when we again became opponents in the late 1960's in the Canada vs. USA International matches, when he was living in Los Angeles. Upon retirement Anil moved close to the USA/Canada border in Washington State so he could come up to see his Vancouver friends on the weekends and eventually we became opponents for the third time when he played for West Vancouver C.C. in the BCMCL. Always the gentleman and an elegant batsman of top calibre, he passed away quietly in the presence of his wife Irene and family. We all shall miss him.

Namibia 480 for 9 dec (B Kotze 163*) and 102 for 2 (Burger 44*, Snyman 38*) beat Canada 286 (Iqbal 140) and 295 (Iqbal 88, Snyman 3-53) by 8 wickets. Namibia made a winning start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Canada at Wanderers Cricket Club in Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday. Chasing a modest target of 102 runs in more than two sessions on the fourth and final day, the home side achieved victory midway through the second session for the loss of just two wickets. 2007-10-26 Day 2: Kotze and Iqbal trade maiden centuries in ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Windhoek
Namibia 480 for 9 declared (B Kotze 163, Scholtz 64, Soraine 3-74) v Canada 233 for 4 (M Iqbal 119, L Klazinga 2-16) Opener Mohammad Iqbal stroked a maiden first-class century to lead Canada's fight back against Namibia in the ICC Intercontinental Cup match at Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia on Friday. Iqbal, playing his 18th first-class match, was undefeated on 119 as the visitors finished the second day's play at 233-4 after Bjorn Kotze's undefeated career-best 163 helped Namibia to declare its first innings at 480-9. Canada requires another 48 runs to avoid the follow-on. [More] [Live Scorecard]

2007-10-25 Day 1: Career-best knocks by captain Kotze and Scholtz give Namibia good start against Canada
Namibia 314 for 6 (B Kotze 87*, Scholtz 64, Verwey 49*, Soraine 3-54) v Canada Captain Bjorn Kotze and Nicholaas Scholtz achieved personal bests to provide Namibia with a positive start to its ICC Intercontinental Cup campaign against Canada at Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia on Thursday. Kotze was undefeated on 87 and Scholtz scored 64, his maiden first-class half century, as the home team finished the opening day's play at 314-6 after electing to bat first. [More] [Live Scorecard]

2007-10-24 Canada's batsmen come up trumps
Canada 274 for 4 (Qaiser Ali 73, Kandappah 62*, Dhaniram 58*) beat Namibia 271 for 5 (Williams 132) by six wickets. Cricinfo - Canada's batsmen carried them to a six-wicket win over Namibia A in a warm-up match in Windhoek. What will worry the Canadians is that none of their bowlers were able to keep the Namibians in check. Craig Williams, a 23-year-old with a first-class average of 112, was the mainstay of the innings with 132 and with the exception of 17-year-old Sean Silver, who fell for 5 in the fifth over, all of the batsmen made reasonable contributions. Canada lost Aftab Shamsudeen, run out three balls into their reply, and then Abul Jabbar for a six-ball 14, but thereafter they batted sensibly in what was a well-paced chase. Trevin Bastiampillai and Qaiser Ali put them ahead of the clock and then some all-out attack by the veteran pairing of Arvind Kandappah and Sunil Dhaniram steered them home with six overs to spare. 2007-10-20 2nd ODI: Obanda leads Kenya chase
Toss won by Canada, who chose to bat first. Canada 189 (47.1 ov) (TC Bastiampillai - 49;SO Tikolo 4/40), Kenya 193/6 (43.1 ov) (A Obanda 85). Kenya wins by 6 wickets. A fine 85 from Alex Obanda, playing in only his second one-dayer, led Kenya to a thumping win over Canada in the second and final ODI at Nairobi. Chasing a modest 190, Kenya rollicked to victory with more than six overs to spare. It was not all plain sailing though. In cool conditions and under cloudy skies, Kenya's top-order struggled with the early loss of Maurice Ouma and Nehemiah Odhiambo. David Obuya (34 from 51) helped put on 41 with Obanda, crunching five fours, before he fell attempting his sixth slog and was caught at deep midwicket off Qaiser Ali. Kenya wins the 2-match series 2-0. [More] [Scorecard]

2007-10-18 1st ODI: Odoyo century leads remarkable chase
Kenya 233 for 6 (Odoyo 111*, Bhatti 3-19) beat Canada 230 (Kandappah 69*, Onyango 3-29) by four wickets. CricInfo - Thomas Odoyo's maiden ODI century led a remarkable Kenya fightback in the opening match of their short series against Canada in Nairobi. He came in with the home side in tatters at 49 for 5 chasing 231, but calmly set about a recovery before taking the game away from Canada with a flurry of boundaries alongside a composed Jimmy Kamande who helped add a match-winning stand of 98 in 13 overs. 2007-10-14 Day 3: Tikolo and Ouma lead Canada rout
Kenya 393 (Odoyo 103*, Bhatti 5-75) and 105 for 1 (Ouma 71*) beat Canada 263 and 229 (Kandappah 87, Bastiampillai 63, Tikolo 4-34) by nine wickets. CricInfo - Kenya opened their Intercontinental Cup campaign with a commanding nine-wicket win against Canada to take maximum points with a day to spare in Nairobi. Steve Tikolo claimed four wickets to leave Kenya chasing 100 for victory and they cruised home as Maurice Ouma helped himself to an unbeaten 68-ball 71. Canada began the day facing a first-innings deficit of 130, following Thomas Odoyo's maiden first-class century on Saturday, and were in immediate trouble as Peter Ongondo removed both openers in the first over. Their main resistance came from a third-wicket stand of 113 between Trevin Bastiampillai (63) and 36-year-old debutant Arvind Kandappah (87). As they pushed Canada into a narrow lead there was a chance Kenya could be set a challenging target, but the home side stuck to their task. 2007-10-13 Day 2: Odoyo's maiden hundred puts Kenya in the driving seat
Day 2 Score: Canada 263 trail Kenya 393 (107.5 ov) by 130 runs. A maiden first-class hundred by Thomas Odoyo has helped Kenya secure a healthy first innings lead after two days of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada in Nairobi. Odoyo hit 14 fours and a six in an unbeaten 103 as the home side, responding to the visitor's opening effort of 263, was dismissed for 393 at Gymkhana Club Ground on Saturday. The 29 year-old all-rounder, who earlier this year was named as the ICC Associate ODI Player of the Year, showed he was equally at home in the longer form of the game as he shepherded Kenya's lower order in impressive fashion. 2007-10-12 Day 1: Dhaniram and Bhatti lead the way for Canada
Day 1 Score: Kenya 8 for 1 trail Canada 263 (Dhaniram 78, Bhatti 57, Kamande 4-56) by 255 runs . A captain's knock from Sunil Dhaniram gave Canada a fighting chance on day one of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Kenya in Nairobi. With his side struggling on 121-6, all-rounder Dhaniram was joined at the crease by number eight batsman Umar Bhatti and, as they have done many times before for their country, they frustrated the bowling and showed they are more than capable of scoring runs at this level. The pair put on 99 for the seventh wicket with Dhaniram eventually being dismissed for a crucial 78. Bhatti didn't stop there, however, and with Durand Soraine, he put on another 40 runs, making a classy half-century and making sure Canada ended up with 263 all out. [More] [CricInfo Live Scorecard]

2007-10-11 Canada off to a winning start
CricInfo - Canada 203 beat Kenya A 193 by ten runs. Canada got their tour of Africa off to a winning start with a 10-run victory over Kenya A at Ruaraka Sports Club. Canada were stuck in by the Kenyans and struggled throughout their innings, with none of their batsmen able to go on and make a decent score as they ended on 203. Moses Otieno and Dominic Wesonga shared three wickets while Ashif Mulla top scored with 36. Kenya started solidly to reach 67 for 1 but lost regular wickets and fell short. With Canada set to meet the full Kenyan side in the Intercontinental Cup later this week, Steve Tikolo, the captain, said his side were ready. "The team is alright and we have been in intensive training for three weeks where we have worked on rectifying our mistakes," he told The Standard. "We believe we will put a good performance to lay a platform to reach the Intercontinental Cup final next year as well as prepare for the next World Cup." 2007-09-04 CCA Letter to John Tory
Dear Mr. Tory: It is estimated that some 6 million Canadians are avid fans of the beautiful sport of CRICKET. Great majority of them reside in Ontario. To a cricket fan the game is not merely a passion but it is a religion. For your upcoming Election Campaign you have chosen to make ?Cricket? as a theme to illustrate the alleged misdoings of your opponents. With the Elections looming, political jockeying is very much the name of the game. On the other hand it is equally important for the politicians that whatever information they are giving out to the public has been conscientiously researched and truthfully presented. [More]

Canada cruise past Argentina in an 8-wicket win to set up an ICC Americas Women?s Championship decider tomorrow. Trinidad & Tobago U17 prove too good for Bermuda to win by 64 runs. Canada encountered little resistance from Argentina in their ICC Americas Women?s Championship game in Toronto today to win by a comfortable 8 wickets, and thereby set up a championship decider against rivals Bermuda tomorrow. All-rounder Joanna White put in a great performance with both bat and ball, to deservedly be named player of the match. She was key to the Canadian team bowling out Argentina for 108 in 34.1 overs, returning figures of 3 for 14 in 7.1 overs. Then with Canada?s reply at a little bit of a crossroad at 31 for 2, White struck a superb 34 not out, off only 33 balls with 6 fours to help steer Canada to 112 for 2 in 16.4 overs and clinch an 8 wicket victory. Unfortunately, due to the difficulties of securing global media support in such a short timeframe, it has proved impossible to bring the project to fruition in 2007.The concept, however, remains a possibility for 2008 and beyond.. The WICB remains committed to working with the CCA to expand cricket in Canada, particularly through exposure to the 20/20 version of the game, which is ideal for the North American cricket public.

2007-07-02 Mangesh Panchal spins the Netherlands to a 45-run victory over Canada in ICC Intercontinental Cup
A fine innings from teenager Alex Kervezee and a crucial all-round performance from Mudassar Bukhari gave the Netherlands (297 all out) a positive start on day one of its ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Canada in Toronto on Thursday. Canada looked to be in trouble on Day 2 falling to 6 for 141, but partnerships between Dhaniram (73 runs) and Sander (57 runs), and Sandher and Osende (60 runs), gave Canada a 40 run lead before declaring on 337 for 9. The Netherlands reply was off to a slow start at 49 for 3. Canada was well placed at the end of the second day of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match with the Netherlands in Toronto, having secured the points for a first innings win and having put the Dutch under pressure second time around. Day 3: A maiden first-class century by Peter Borren put the Netherlands on course for a come-from-behind victory over Canada. Borren, playing his 3rd match at this level, hit a polished 105 to steer the tourists to 310, setting Canada a 271-run victory target. When the stumps were drawn for the penultimate day, the home team was struggling at 44-2 and required another 266 runs for maximum points with Umar Bhatti, who has a fractured thumb, unlikely to bat. On Day 4, Canada got a good start to the day with an 85 run partnership between Trevnin Bastiampillai and Qaiser Ali. Wickets then began to fall regularly, and except for a few good partnerships, Canada could not sustain the upper hand. Umer Bhatti did bat despite an injury, but it was too late and Canada fell 46 runs short. Final Score: Netherlands 297 & 310; Canada 337/9d & 225. [More] [Scorecard]

2007-05-18 Clarification on Possible 20/20 Event
In the light of press commentary from various sources over the past weeks, the Canadian Cricket Association wishes to clarify the formal and current position in relation to a possible 20/20 event to be held in Canada, featuring the West Indies and, possibly, Pakistan. Preliminary discussions were held with the West Indies Cricket Board in the early part of 2007; and we understand that the WICB has also been in contact with the Pakistan Cricket Board about the same event. The CCA most certainly supports this initiative by the WICB to hold a 20/20 tournament in Canada, given the growth of cricket across the country and the successes which our national team have enjoyed on the field. We also believe the 20-over format is ideal for the expansion of cricket in North America, because the format provides an exciting version of the game, lasting between three and four hours - much along the lines of major league baseball. The proposed 20/20 event would be held in Toronto, at a venue still to be decided. However, as Bruce Aanensen, the Chief Executive of the WICB, has stated, a major pre-condition for the event is the finalization of global television rights. The CCA will provide regular, and formal, updates via this website as we receive more information.

2007-03-28 The South Asian contribution to the world of cricket
Over the past two years, the Access and Diversity Unit in Parks, Forestry and Recreation has been working towards the development and promotion of cricket within the city of Toronto, in conjunction with several community partners. The exponential growth of cricket across the City of Toronto and the GTA has been largely due to the diverse communities that practice this sport and continue to pass these skills on to younger generations. The Access and Diversity Unit will be creating a display on cricket entitled: The South Asian contribution to the world of cricket ,to recognize the contributions of this community to the development of this sport. The exhibit will be on display during the City of Toronto?s official South Asian Heritage month in May 2007. In particular, the exhibit will cover the following components: ? Origins of cricket in Canada and Toronto- a history; ? Contributions to the International Cricket; ? Contributions of South Asians to the development of cricket in Toronto; ? Key individuals, teams and dates from the community; ? Toronto sites where cricket is played including City of Toronto parks, private clubs etc. This presents an exciting opportunity to educate the larger Toronto community on the efforts and experiences of South Asians within the world of cricket. As a foremost institution in the development of this sport, we are kindly asking for your assistance in the collection of archival material such as photographs, equipment and other ?artifacts? related to cricket. The exhibit will recognize all the contributions made by community group and agencies. Please contact Krishanthy Shu. [e-mail]

2007-01-24 Canada Wins Final Game over Kenya by 69 runs. --- Le Canada gagne contre Kenya par 69 points dans son dernier match.
In a game that meant nothing to the points standing Canada defeated Kenya by 69 runs as the Tri Series in Kenya concluded today. Canada won the toss and again elected to bat . For the second consecutive day it seemed that their modest target would not be good enough for the highly ranked Kenyans. But only Shah and skipper Tikolo offered any resistance as Kenya slumped to the spin attack of Canada. The victory will act as a boost for Canada as they head into the World Cricket League. The team had suffered close defeats against the Netherlands and Scotland and beating the number one ranked Associate will do a great deal for their confidence, especially when considering three of their top players were not available for this series (G.Barnett, I.Billcliffe and Umar Bhatti). Next game for Canada will be the 27th a warm up match vs Uganda as they head into the World Cricket League Division 1 in Nairobi starting on January 30th. The two top teams in addition to winning $ 250,000 prize money will earn a spot in the first 20/20 World Competition to be held in South Africa later this year. Teams in the WCL Division 1: Kenya, Scotland, Ireland, Bermuda, Canada and the Netherlands. [Scorecard] [CricInfo Report] [Cricket Europe Report]
