ICC WTC Update
|
|
The ICC?s Winter Training Camp (WTC) may well help to ensure that Canada can never again be accused of being a one-man band.
In the past that accusation could have been made thanks to the exploits of John Davison, the off-spinning all-rounder who smashed the fastest hundred in ICC Cricket World Cup history against the West Indies (67 balls) in 2003.

Day 3- CANADA ROMPS TO EASY VICTORY
|
Americas Region ? 2005 Intercontinental Cup
Canada vs Cayman Island, August 31, Sept 1,2, 2005
Toronto Cricket Club , Toronto , Canada
Canada easily defeated the Cayman Islands by a margin of 120 runs in the third and final
contest of the Americas Region Intercontinental Cup.
The competition which was played over the past 11 days at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club saw Bermuda dethrone the defending champions Canada winning both of their games .
The match that ended today was well in Canada?s control but what was interesting was the remarkable improvement as the tournament progressed by the Cayman Islands squad. Playing for the first time in three day competition, the Caymanians struggled adjusting to the longer version of the game especially against Bermuda. While never a threat to Canada there was a remarkable improvement. With very little time to prepare for this tournament due to the late withdrawal of the invitation to the USA and limited facilities in the Cayman Islands as they try to rebuild after Hurricane Ivan last year, the Cayman team was eager for the opportunity to gain valuable experience. They did extremely well considering those two major hurdles.
When the day began, Cayman was chasing a massive total of 295 to win. For the first time in the entire competition all seven batsmen reached double figures. Pearson Best with a solid 53 was supported by Franklin Hinds (35), and skipper Ryan Bovell with 18. Earlier in the innings Steve Gordon (14), Ainsley Hall (30) ,Marc Chin (14), and Roland Ebanks (26) all reached double figures.
But the day really belonged to Canada?s spinners Sunil Dhaniram and Kevin Sandher who took a combined total of eight wickets as the pitch finally gave some turn.
Sandher ended with 3/51 from eighteen overs while Dhaniram took 5/20 from 15.5 overs.
Henry Osinde?s brilliant bowling in the first innings when he took 7/53 earned him the Man of the Match.
The final points table sees Bermuda with 62 points, followed by Canada with 51 and the Cayman Islands with 23. Bermuda will now represent the Americas at the semi-finals in Namibia in October.

DAY 2- OSINDE PUTS CANADA IN CONTROL
|
Americas Region ? 2005 Intercontinental Cup
Canada vs Cayman Island, August 31, Sept 1,2, 2005
Toronto Cricket Club, Toronto, Canada
Right arm fast bowler, Henry Osinde appearing in only his second tournament for his new country put Canada in control of their match against the Cayman Islands with a sparkling performance of seven wickets for fifty three runs in 14.1 overs.
Resuming with their overnight total at 5 for 1 Cayman Islands found the pace of Bhatti and Osinde too hostile for their likely. Wickets fell quickly as Osinde ripped through the batting order and at one stage the visitors were reduced to 41 for 5. To their credit the Caymanians fought back lead by their skipper Ryan Bovell who scored 44 before being caught behind off Osinde. The lower order tried to support their skipper and did well to reach 159. But the day belongs to Henry Osinde who ended with figures of 14.1-2-53-7.
Canada?s lead was 181 but they did not enforce the follow on and maybe because of this huge lead produced a rather lack luster effort in their second innings losing two early wickets for 22 runs. Ashish Bagai playing with a very painful finger and Qaiser Ali making his first appearance for Canada started the recovery with a fine partnership of 72 before Bagai was caught by J.Linton off the bowling of Marc Chin for 42. Ali then took things in his own hands and despite two more quick wickets he managed to steer the Canadians to 151 in 38.5 overs at which time the skipper declared their innings closed giving Cayman Islands a target of 332 runs for victory. Ali innings of 67 not out lasted 173 minutes and included five boundaries.
Mr. Ali was not finished yet as the skipper brought him and Kevin Sandher ( both spinners) into the attack later in the evening. Steve Gordon and Ainsley Hall had carefully brought the Cayman Island total to 38 without loss when Ali bowled Gordon to end the second day?s play with Cayman still needing 295 runs for victory with nine wickets in hand.
Don Maxwell who scored 114 for Canada in their first innings is still suffering from back spasms and did not appear for Canada today.
Tomorrow is the final day in this match which will decide the second place team as Bermuda has already captured the Americas Region title and will represent the region in Namibia in October.

BERMUDA defeated Cayman by an Innings & 105 Runs
|
Americas Region ? 2005 Intercontinental Cup
Bermuda vs Cayman Island, August 27,28,29 2005
Toronto Cricket Club , Toronto , Canada
Resuming their innings at 50/4 and trailing by 142 runs, Cayman Islands offered no resistance on the final day of their first ever three-day match. Dwayne Leverock and Kevin Hurdle sailed through the remaining six wickets allowing only 35 and the game was over in just over an hour?s play. Leverock again was outstanding, the big spinner took 6 for 16 for a total match figure of 11/72. Easily a Man of the Match performance in any game but Clay Smith with a brilliant 138 in the first innings at a crucial time of the match was awarded the honour.
With their victory Bermuda by an innings and 105 runs they easily won the Americas Region Intercontinental Cup and date in the semi-finals against Kenya in October. This is the second major honour for Bermuda this year having qualified for the 2007 World Cup by placing fourth in the recent ICC Trophy.
Cayman Islands playing in their first ever three-day match admitted it was a new and difficult experience but welcomed the opportunity to learn from the event.
Canada will now take on Cayman Islands on Wednesday for second place in the tournament, however weather forecasters expect heavy rains in the Toronto area from Hurricane Katrina and if correct this match could be reduced to a two day event.

Day 2- Runs flow freely from Bermudan bats on Day 2 vs Cayman Islands.
|
|
Americas Region ? 2005 Intercontinental Cup
Bermuda vs Cayman Island, August 27,28,29 2005
Toronto Cricket Club , Toronto , Canada
When play resumed on day 2 of the match between Bermuda and Cayman Islands there was some hope for the Caymanians as they bowlers captured three wickets for 56 runs in the early going. Any further hope of success was demolished by two huge partnerships, first between Irving Romaine and Clay Smith (158) . Smith was joined by Dean Minors in another partnership of 150.
Captain Clay Smith scored his 138 in 289 minutes and 186 balls including 16 fours and 1 six. Irvine Romaine who retired in the 64th over on 100 exact came back to add 11 runs before being caught by J.Linton off the Cayman?s most successful bowler of the day young Troy Taylor. Dean Minors also fell victim to Troy Taylor but not before an entertaining 74 off 71 balls including 5 fours and 5 sixes.
The Bermudans feasted on the Cayman bowling which consisted mainly of medium pace bowling. Ronald Ebanks seem to be the only recognized spinner on the team, but he alone could not provide enough variety in the attack to trouble the Bermudan bats.
When Irvine Romaine was finally out Captain Clay Smith declared the innings close in the 89th over with the score at 387/7.
Troy Taylor bowled well under the circumstance. The youthful right arm medium pacer ended with respectable figures of 13-3-60-4.
Bermuda?s declaration gave them a chance to bowl for 45 minutes before the closing time of play . They made good use of this final period capturing four Caymanian wickets for 50 runs. Poor shot selection in this crucial period that called for restraint helped the Bermudans to put a firm grip on this game . Cayman still trails Bermuda by 142 runs with only six wickets in hand.
It now looks certain that Bermuda will be the Americas Region qualifier for the semi finals to be held in Namibia in October.

|
Americas Region ? 2005 Intercontinental Cup
Bermuda vs Cayman Island, August 27,28,29 2005
Toronto Cricket Club , Toronto , Canada
After getting a good opening start from Steve Gordon and Ainsley Hall, the Cayman Islands playing in their first Intercontinental Cup failed to capitalize and were all out for 197 after 74 overs
Dwayne Leverock was Bermuda?s best bowler. The big man had impressive figures of 27-10-56-5.
Rain stopped play for 29 minutes at the end of the 64th over with the score on 164/7.
Steve Gordon had to retire hurt at 50 runs in 92 balls in the 25th over, when he returned after Best was caught for 30 , he faced 35 balls adding only 15 runs before being bowled by Hasan Durham for 65.
Captain Ryan Bovell tried to boost his team?s total with a good knock of 31 not out including two massive sixes. Pearson Best contributed 30 before being caught by Janeiro Tucket off the bowling of Leverock.
Leverock ended the innings with an impressive performance capturing 5/56 off 27 overs. Hasan Durham took three for 56 in 22 overs . Janeiro Tucker was impressive in the field taking three catches in the slips
Bermuda?s reply was halted after only three overs as rain interrupted play for the second time today. The umpire decided no further play was possible and the lost time will be made up tomorrow with the game resuming 30 minutes earlier than the normal starting time.

Day 3- Americas Region Intercontinental Cup
Bermuda vs Canada
Aug 23,24,25, 2005,Toronto Cricket Club ,Toronto ,Canada
BERMUDA DEFEATS CANADA BY 48 RUNS
The first 2005 Americas Region Intercontinental Cup match produced a major upset as Bermuda defeated the reigning Champions ,Canada by 48 runs.
Bermuda resumed with their overnight total at 209/5 with the Tucker and Minors partnership at 93. Canada?s bowlers had moderate success as both Henry Osinde and Don Maxwell kept the Bermudans on their toes. With the score at 235 Maxwell had Minors trapped leg before for a brilliant 66. He shared a partnership of 119 with Janeiro Tucker. This was the turning point of the match. Tucker passed his century and was taking most of the strike to protect the tail enders. He was the last wicket to fall with the Bermudan score at 311 and his personal score at 123 in 413 minutes ,293 balls.
Bermuda had given Canada a reasonable score of 230 to win in approximately 68 overs. It was going to be a good finish but it did not take long for Bermuda?s opening bowlers to strike, and strike often. Opening bat Z.Surkari was the first to go with the score on one. He was followed quickly by Maxwell , Ifill and the skipper Dassanyake all with the score only at 17. Sunil Dhaniram and Ashish Bagai then put on a 53 run partnership to raise the hopes of the local fans. Dhaniram hit five fours in his brief 35 run ,47 minute appearance at the wicket. Bagai did not stay much longer when on 20 and the score on 73 he was brilliantly caught by Salem Mukaddem. Canada?s score of 73/6 put Bermuda in the drivers seat. George Codrinton (40) and newcomer Ali Qaiser (52) then decided it was not over yet as the pair added 91 runs for 7th wicket partnership. This proved to be the last resistance and when Qaiser was given run out on a close call it was impossible to ask the last pair to score another 50 runs or bat 15 overs to the finish.
In the 57th over Kevin Sandher was given out lbw and it was all over. Bermuda won by a comfortable margin of 48 runs.
For his outstanding batting performance Janeiro Tucker was given the Man of the Match award.
Bermuda takes on the Cayman Islands starting on Friday.

BERMUDA FIGHTS BACK ON DAY 2
|
|
Day 2- Americas Region
Intercontinental Cup
Bermuda vs Canada
Aug 23,24,25, 2005
Toronto Cricket Club
Toronto ,Canada
Bermuda restricted Canada today with a fine bowling spell from their big man Dwayne Leverock .After getting batsman Ashish Bagai bowled for just four more than his overnight score , he mopped up the tail finishing with fine figures of 22.2 ?7-46-4.
Leverock was supported at the other end by medium pacer Saleem Mukaddem who finished with figures of 16-3-52-4. Canada?s lead of 82 runs gave Bermuda a fighting chance providing they could get a better batting performance in their second innings.
Bermuda?s opening batsmen failed again and at lunch they were struggling with the score at 40/3 trailing the home side by 42 runs with 7 wickets in hand. Skipper Clay Smith (45) first with Salem Mukaddem and then with Janeiro Tucker, came to his team?s rescue with 4th and 5th wicket partnerships of identical scores of 55 runs. But it was Janeiro Tucker and wicket keeper Dean Minors who stole the show with a brilliant 6th wicket unbeaten stand of 93 to give Bermuda a lead of 127 runs with 5 wickets in hand.
If this was a boxing match round one ( day 1) would have been awarded to Canada but round two was all Bermuda. The Canadian bowlers, after early success could do nothing right, even a confident appeal for a caught behind was disallowed and the bowlers toiled well into the evening sun with no luck as Smith, Tucker and Minors led the great recovery. The wicket continues to hold up well offering no help to the spinners, the most exciting spell of bowling came from the right hand fast bowler Henry Osinde who cut lose with some deliveries which seem to be heading for the orbiting space station. Bermuda?s batting after the third wicket fell, was much more disciplined . The four Canadian spin bowlers sent down a total of 50 overs at a cost of only 94 runs.
The match now hinges on the first session on day three. An early break through could swing the tide back to the home side but should Tucker and Minors be allowed to continue their heroics Bermuda could steal this one from the Canadians.

Intercontinental Cup ? Bermuda vs Canada
August 23,24,25, Toronto Cricket Club
Toronto , Canada
Close of Play ? Day 1
BERMUDA FIGHTS BACK IN FINAL SESSION OF THE DAY
Bermuda, trying to defend a modest first innings score of 125 , fought back in the final session of play to restrict Canada?s lead to 24 runs with four wickets in hand.
A fine bowling spell after tea by Salem Mukaddem ( 11-3-34-3) and Dwayne Leverock
( 14-5-26-1) saw four Canadian wickets fall for six runs. A 5th wicket partnership of 55 between Sunil Dhaniram and Ashish Bagai brought the Canadians closer to Bermuda?s total before Dhaniram was bowled by Mukaddem with the score at 90. Bagai was joined by George Codrington and this pair added an unbeaten stand of 59 to end the day?s play with Canada up by 24 runs with four wickets in hand.
For Ashish Bagai it was a great return to the national squad after being unavailable for the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland. Bagai must be enjoying his efforts this day after holding four catches behind the stumps he was clearly the best batsman today with a solid 72 not out, including ten boundaries. The selectors had originally left him off the team fearing his inactivity due to work commitments might have made him a little rusty. When Desmond Chumney failed his per tournament medical the selectors was forced to reconsider their position , there was no rust showing today for the former Canadian U19 World Cup team captain .
Earlier in the day , another U19 Youth World Cup team captain, Umar Bhatti wrecked the Bermuda?s batting side with a brilliant bowling performance of 17.5-4-40-8. For the young, left hand medium-fast bowler it was his best bowling performance, out doing his performance in the Intercontinental Cup finals in 2004.
After a disappointing performance in the recent ICC Trophy and an injury which caused him to miss several games it was good news for Bermuda as their veteran Captain Clay Smith returned to form with a solid innings of 52
The first session on day two just might determine which way this game will go. An early break through for Bermuda would put them back into the fight despite their batting failure on day one. Should Bagai and Codrington continue their unbeaten stand well into play before lunch , Canada would certainly put a firm grip on game one of the Intercontinental Cup.

There are times when everything goes right for a team and so it is for Team USA in the U19 WCQS being played in Toronto. Day 4 brought some glimmer of hope for the three teams chasing the USA as the Americans had a bye. Instead of gaining four points all teams had to settle for a no result as all games were completely rained out with out a ball being bowled. This means that none of the three teams with a chance to catch the USA, can now reach that goal.

2005 Provincials - Day 4
|
|
Another exciting win for Ontario. Ontario, batting first, scored a modest 162 in their alloted 50 overs. The main contributors being Umar Bhatti (39) and Surendra Seeraj (36). Alberta struggled early, losing their first 3 wickets for only 21 runs. However solid batting from their middle and lower order saw them closing in on their taget. Alberta needed 5 runs from 2 overs with 3 wickets in hand. On came Rizwan Cheena - bowling a maiden and taking 2 wickets. Umar Bhatti bowled the last over and no matter how hard the batsman swung he could not even touch a ball - another maiden. Well done Ontario.
In the Manitoba/Quebec game, Manitoba, batting first, were skittled for 100 runs. Fine bowling by the Patel duo - Naresh - 4/37 and Manish - 3/11. Quebec reached this target for the loss of only two wickets. Capt. Ali Qaiser carried his bat with 50 n.o.

2005 Provincials - Day 3
|
|
At Hugo Ray Park, BC continued its winning ways crushing Manitoba by 113 runs. Scoring steadily, BC totalled 215 in its allotted overs. In its innings, Manitoba struggled from the outset, losing 2 wickets in the first over, and never recovered. Alberta won a thriller over Quebec in Stanley Park. Quebec, batting first, totalled 209 in its 50 overs thanks mainly to a splendid 84 from Captain, Ali Qaiser. A 128 run 2nd wicket partnership by Alberta's Dhami and Abbas, put them well on their way to their target which was reached with 2 overs to spare.

2005 Provincials - Day 2
|
|
On day 2, BC skittled Alberta for 116 and then after a slow start, won easily by 5 wickets thanks to solid batting from their middle order. The Ontario and Quebec game was a low scoring thriller. The Quebec bowlers humbled the Ontario batsmen who collapsed fo 110 all out. Excellent bowling by the Ontario openers soon had Quebec in trouble. Good batting by the tailenders saw them take the total to 110 but the last batsmen got a thick edge to end a very exciting game.

A homecoming has never been so sweet for any Bermuda cricket team ? and yesterday it got $100,000 sweeter. Amid accolades and eloquent superlatives from the country?s officialdom and an outpouring of emotion and gratitude from fellow citizens, it was the sight of Government putting their money where their mouth is that really made the Island?s cricketers sit up. The surprise presentation of a $100,000 cheque by Premier Alex Scott to Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president Reggie Pearman at City Hall yesterday drew loud applause and cheers from the crowd and cricketers as the Island paused to salute the squad which earned a place in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

Canada get set to take on Namibia in Fridays opener.
|
|
Today the team is studying videos of Namibia and Scotland which Derek and
Colin prepared during the warm up games. The team is in very good spirits and morale is high. Some of our batsmen are struggling to cope with the movement and swing of the ball in the early overs, the team is working to deal with this. The bowlers are doing very well, with Henry being particularly effective. The selectors will have to make a tough choice prior to Friday?s game. Do they play Henry and drop Dhillion as Namibia's strength seems to be batting, will we need an additional bowler? We can only play two deemed nationals so the choice will come down to these two as Pubudu will play as the keeper.
Sanjay has been rested for the warm up games as he has a slight ankle
problem. Desmond has a slight muscle strain and has also been rested. Both will be OK for Friday's game.

CCA Trials Game 2 & 3 Results

The CCA national selectors have a daunting task ahead of them to select the final squad of 14 as day two of the trials produced more of the same from day one. Everyone have high praises for the ground crew at King City who worked hard to produce a wicket that?s delivering consistent bounce and pace.
Man of the match on day two was Sunil Dhaniram who scored 31 and took four wickets for 28 off 10 overs. The only other bright stops were the 10 wicket partnership stands of 63 between Salmon Chaudhary 44 not out, and Zahid Hussain 17 along with Kevin Sandher who took 4 wickets for 37 off 10 overs. Man of the match on day three was Kevin Sandher and man of the series/Trials was given to Sunil Dhaniram. See links below for more details.

Brijcoomar returns hopeful
|
|
March 10 -Sharenews By RON FANFAIR
Canadian cricket umpire Ashook Brijcoomar is optimistic that he will be named on the new International Cricket Council (ICC) Associates and Affiliates panel that will be announced shortly.
Brijcoomar was one of 20 umpires who officiated in the just concluded ICC World Cup Qualifying Series Division Two tournament in Malaysia and participated in a two-day seminar with Australia's Darrell Hair and ICC Umpires and Referees Manager Chris Kelly.
"We were assessed on both on-field and classroom performances," Brijcoomar said on his return home. "The sessions were intense and they covered all aspects of the game. At the end of the day, I think we were all prepared for the challenge."
Brijcoomar has kept his umpiring skills sharp on a yearly basis by officiating in Guyana and other parts of the world.
"Cricket is played in Toronto for about five months a year, so you have to seek opportunities elsewhere if you want to be on top of your game and be ready for such an opportunity like the one that has now presented itself with the ICC."
With business interests in Guyana, Brijcoomar often spends a few months each year in the South American country umpiring in club matches. He's currently in Argentina officiating in a Masters limited-overs series.

USACA Fights Back
|
|
Dainty was not prepared to take the criticism lying down, and said that the USACA had not committed to Project USA because of "unreasonable demands" imposed by the ICC. "They have demanded that all of the funds raised from the project go to the ICC headquarters, and then they in turn would redistribute the monies," Dainty told a Canadian website. "We have no idea what funds we would get back from the project. Also, who was to say that they would not take that money and start another organisation. "You could say that perhaps I am lucky to be alive, because in years gone by I might have been lynched. Then again, you get a better idea of the people you are dealing with. With that kind of attitude, I am sceptical they can even deliver what they promised."
